1.5g Preliminary Lighting Shots

Hey y'all,

Thanks to the thread on the close-out Ocean Free 1.5g tanks, I've got one as a project.

I'm planning to run 2x13w PC over it and roughed out a pattern hood out of acrylic scrap. I still need to make a few adjustments to it, finish glueing, and run a laminate trimmer over the front and back piece, but I think it's going to turn out nice. I'll sleeve the wires as well.

Here's a few preliminary shots with a quarter and a pop can size juice can for scale.

that looks great! You've made a good job.

I think it would look better if you trimmed the side sections so they were flush with the top though.

I plan to trim the front and back pieces, right now it is just held together with a few dots of solvent. I wanted to make sure it will fit the tank before it was all put together.

Having it open top tank style seems to keep the heat up in the fixture, and out of the tank, so I'm happy about that too.

Is there a store online where you can buy these Ocean Free tanks?

This was the thread that had the closeout in it, I picked up the tank for $6 and something.

The tank mentioned in this thread,

has a smaller model listed on the same site, with the same dimensions

I think they reused the picture between the two (the 1.6 and 2.7 gal tanks). The light fixture would be too long with the legs shown in the picture to fit over the 1.6g tank, since it's 9" wide and 13w bulbs are 7" long.

Here it is trimmed up and with the wires sleeved. If I redo the acrylic in black, I'll drill the exit for the wires on the back, rather than the side. I'm real happy with how clean the wiring and the hood came out.
