InAtTheDeepEnd
the rock is leaching stuff - my fault for jumping in and not curing it ..... it shouldn't be an issue if i keep up on water changes for a bit and stick with fast growing corals, plus keep other nutrients suitably high so they don't become limiting factors in growth and cause tissue burn (which I was planning on anyway, no ULNS here thank you very much 🤣) Quote Link to comment
InAtTheDeepEnd
Ooh so here is where using dirty sand to jump start your cycle has its drawbacks Shit is gonna explode with algae when I put the lights on 🤣 oh well at least I've ordered macro?! Lmao guess we'll see what happens - I'm working on the basis that photosynthetic corals are nutrient consumers but CUC are nutrient producers so adding fast growing hardy types might (knock on wood?!!!) lower these a bit lmao. Then as and when the uglies hit I'll get some critters. My planned invert stocking is 2 dwar blue leg hermits, an emerald crab, some columbellidae, a strombus snail, a couple of cowries, 2-3 nassarius snails and maybe a sexy shrimp. (Obviously not all at once!!!) Quote Link to comment
Pjanssen
is the tank a 30 liter or 30 gallon? A 30 gallon could handle that cleanup crew all at once if you have algae and diatoms starting. Maybe hold off on the sexy shrimp cuz that's not really a clean up crew member, just a really cute addition. Also, I wouldn't put an emerald crab in until you have something for it to eat unless you plan to feed it. Quote Link to comment
InAtTheDeepEnd
Houston we have a problem .... My Hanna checker has been wrong since before I set this tank up 😭 I tried to calibrate it today and it wouldn't find the calibration fluid, just kept reading 'ERR'. I tried five times with two different sachets of fluid but had the same result. Eventually I gave up and tried it in my tank again but got a reading of 1.016 when it was 1.026 previously. Perplexed, I checked the tank with my old D-D refractometer.... And the tank salinity read as 1.051! 😱 I double checked the calibration of the refractometer with RO and it was spot on - so all this time my tank really has been hypersaline, thanks to a dodgy salinity probe:( I've spent all day adjusting the salinity of the reefs-to-be to 1.025 and my brackish tanks. Quite upset to be honest because, whilst the Hanna checker was overdue being calibrated, that doesn't explain why it's gone so wrong. I'm just glad my brackish fish are all ok and that I found out before putting any livestock in the reefs. 😞 1 1 Quote Link to comment
InAtTheDeepEnd
Keep wondering if I should be running the lights to get some algae going I want diatoms because I want copepods but idk you can have too much of a good thing after all 🫤 Quote Link to comment
debbeach13
I had to swap from my phone to my laptop. On the phone it looked like you stuck some fish bones to the left side of the back wall. 1 Quote Link to comment
InAtTheDeepEnd
What the ####? Did a WC in the upstairs tank n it foamed up like a bowl of fairy liquid 🥴🤯 persist bubbles but they dissipated when I swirled my hand through. Didn't smell and just tasted like normal reef tank water... Maybe even a bit less salty tbh They've gone now 🤷 Maybe organics I stirred up from the sand? But it didn't smell 😕 Quote Link to comment
ml86743
Was the vessel used for WC-water clean? Quote Link to comment

I feel ya though. I had a hanna salinty checker that just started to give me erroneous info one day. Lasted about 2 years. No idea why. I replaced it, hoping this one will last. Quote Link to comment

(Mondays I water change 14/17 tanks normally, yesterday did the two saltwater ones also. But only one of the SW tanks went foamy.) Quote Link to comment

I'm fuming about it because honestly, I have been relying on that thing for all my tanks for like 18 months. Even used it in FW to bump the salinity up to 1.003 (or what I thought was 1.003) to treat ich and lost all but one of my stiphodon ornatus , I guess the salinity was wrong then too and I only shut my old 4g down less than 8 weeks ago so it was probably wrong then too. Maybe it caused/contributed to the crash idk. Just pretty upsetting that a tech malfunction has led to animals suffering/dying 😞 I guess lesson learnt is always double check stuff and don't rely on one method of measuring. Quote Link to comment

InAtTheDeepEnd
Awe. There was a lil freebie in there 😊🥰 idk if it's green monti or pavona though 😂 The lil freebie I didn't order the chaeto in with the caulerpa either but I'm not mad about it being in there. So this is 6 frags plus two decent handfuls of macro posted for £31.95 😎 a steal if I do say so myself, thank you https://jbsmarines.co.uk 👌 Xenia is getting kind of buffeted by flow but idk if I'll do anything about it yet because it's such a weed lol. Plus the idea was always to make sure everything was ok then put the Xenia in the tank under the stairs so it can dominate without stifling other stuff 2 Quote Link to comment
InAtTheDeepEnd
ok yeah i've moved it into the other tank and it's already pulsing, yay 🙂 2 Quote Link to comment

InAtTheDeepEnd
Oof having issues with the Xenia tank The light was making it WAY too hot so I've changed it out to another one though this is less powerful. But the Xenia is all scrunched up and mad. Hope I haven't fried it lol Quote Link to comment
