Yes, a hermit crab should be fine. Get a blue-legged or a left-handed/zebra hermit, they're small, and be sure to provide a lot of empty shells for it.

thanks

According to standard new saltwater tank owner regulations, the third fish for the tank should be a 1 inch yellow tang.  No doubt about it.  Especially with the outdated 1 inch of fish per gallon rule in use (which is mainly a freshwater rule for community tanks consisting of small freshwater fish).

Because, you know, fish don't ever grow or anything...they stay the exact same size forever. 😵

To be fair, the OP said the store was using a 1" per 5 gallon rule.  Which is much better, but as previously outlined, doesn't take into account the individual needs and temperaments of the fish.

Oops...I misread that.  1 inch per 5 gallons is the outdated rule coming from the books dated back in the 70's.

Still if that were the case, then the OP should only have 1 fish in there according to the shop's advice.  Not two.  🙂
