scarletknight06
I recently read at reefcentral about somebody having a bad experience with them. Has anyone gotten healthy perculas from petco? Are they captive bred? I ask this because at petco they are $11.99 and at my LFS they are $24.99. anyone with experience with petco perculas?? Link to comment

Noonan
Hm.. Some local people here. The PetCo on Ryders Lane is OK. I havent been there in a while but I do remember talking to someone that worked there. They told me that I didnt need to keep my clown trigger in my 125g (which at that time was getting smaller for the clown). He said a 30 gallon would be fine for most adult clown triggers. But, that doesnt mean their fish qualty is bad. Pet Paradise has pretty cheap fish. Maybe you should check there for percs. Link to comment
Tigahboy
I got my perc (my first fish) from Petco like 2 months ago. He has been doing fine. Has a crazy appetite and is very active. But I'm in Southern California and I'm sure there may be differences. I waited a good 2 weeks and kept checking back in to make sure the stock as a whole were doing well. I then inspected my perc at Petco for a good 30 minutes before picking him out. But I did go to another Petco about 5 miles away before getting mine and all their percs looked sickly and weak. Just look at them for awhile and closly inspect them... Link to comment

Turk
If you wanna drive a half hour up to East Hanover there is an awesome LFS called Aquatic Visions (store front says Hanover Pet). Best place I've seen so far with the most knowledgable staff. I get everything from there and I have had not a single problem with anything I've bought from them. Next door to them is NJ Pets, which is "ok" as far as fish go, but have a very limited selection of corals. I'm from Parsippany btw Link to comment
cjm033
i know petcos fish are captive bred. my petco has a sign that says what spieces they have that are captive bred from ORA. Link to comment
scarletknight06
noonan, do you have a number for that place in east hanover so yes or no for perculas from petco??? Link to comment

willgr1
I am an employee of petco. I head the aquatics and reptile department in the Bel Air Maryland store. Our clownfish come from ORA and they are captive raised. I have yet so have any problems with any order ORA has sent us. Everything has always come in health, and left my store in good health. scarletknight06
captive raised is an ambiguous title. does that mean they were bred in captivity? Link to comment
willgr1
yeah, i meant bred, not just raised. Link to comment
FateX9
Yeah, I visited ORA's facility as a school trip with my class. Their facilities are impressive but they didn't really show us their good stuff. They have a lot of hush hush stuff there that only employees are aloud to see. Cool thing about my school is that after the grads do their research projects and have left over fish, we can take what we want. always a good deal got 2 juvenile clarkii's It really doesn't matter if it's from ORA or any other place. What matters is how the employees take care of them. Link to comment
scarletknight06
yeah thats what i'm worried about Link to comment
Kool-cat
Sometimes if your patient you can wait for your pet shop to have a sale on perculas. I got 4-1inch perculas for $20.00. Except they where carrying diseases. I only have 1 now. Link to comment
scarletknight06
that seems to defeat the purpose of waiting for a sale Link to comment
Skittin
I work at a petco on east coast the ones that we get are captive bred the reason the price is less is because we can buy in great quanities off and on we will get a bad batch in but most times they look good and do well even when they have gone to there new homes alot of it has to do with the time of the year and time it takes for the shipments to get to the stores and of course UPS Link to comment
embryoguy
i think with any fish, watch for signs, and consider qc Link to comment
Cameron
I'm a store manager of a Petco in Plano, TX. As the previous employees stated, all of our percula clowns, tomato clowns, clarkii clowns, orchid dottybacks, neon dottybacks, and black oscillaris come from ORA- and are all bred in captivity. The perculas are usually $14.99 but they are on sale for $11.99 right now. (some of this varies by which region the store is in) FadeX9 made a good point. Ask your local Petco aquatic specialist if they have completed the CAS aquatics certification. If they have, they should be taking good care of their system. BTW - I just lost my aquatics specialist. I am currently looking for someone in the Plano area who can maintain a MARS system with minimal shrink. I need someone who is also very customer friendly and proffesional. At least 2 years in a RETAIL aquatics position preferred. Link to comment

pos_user
by the way, i live in the same town as aquatic visions (hanover pet) They have great stuff, hard to find stuff, and a lot of it...the only thing is, they know they are one of the best around here...so they are pricey as Hell. Anyway, petco sold me a true perc, and turned out to be an onyx perc....so im happy with that. Link to comment
scarletknight06
I actually just picked up 2 perc;s from petco on sat. They are eating and seem to be healthy, so all is well i hope. Link to comment
