Read the thread again. Just noticed you don't have anything in there. I suggest emptying out and replacing all water then start your cycle with a piece of shrimp.

You are either being punked.. punking us.. or you've solved the CA water problem and need to get that tank to CA immediately so they can use it as a de-salinization system.

Probably not a good habit to get into, but definitely taste a drop of it. If the water is salty, then your refractometer needs to be calibrated or replaced. Obviously, saltwater mixed to 1.027 can't go into a tank and then read 1.000 within a few hours, so it's either faulty equipment, or someone did something weird to your tank.

Did you calibrate the refractometer with the solution that came with it? Or did you calibrate it with RODI?

Since both pieces of equipment (almost) agreed on the salinity beforehand and they agree right now, my guess is that they're functioning fine. I wouldn't be surprised if someone spilled a coke in the tank or something, and they thought the best solution would be to scoop out all the water and replace it with tap.

Definitely following along, though, because this is indeed quite the mystery.

Well, I came home early and found the kids by the tank with cokes propped up on the screen. I asked them if anything happened yesterday with the water or if they had put anything in the tank. They both said no, in a suspicious way. I tested the water again with another refractometer after using the solution it came with and it read just over 0.

I'm going to go ahead and say the kids F@@@ed it up and just decided to hide what they did. They leave tomorrow with the relatives to go home so Ill start over again then.

I appreciate everyone's help, I never considered this as a possibility and I apologize for taking up anyone's time. I am pretty embarrassed that this seems to be the answer. Its not something I thought about.

But it is a rather funny start to a tank. Kids are assholes. Atleast they didn't damage it and now you have done a good leak test.

Yeah it really pisses me off though, they should have said something, they knew I was running around trying to figure it out. It is a comical start though.

Good kids aren't assholes, my kids would get their ass kicked by me if they dared do such a thing ... but they know better. Sorry you had to deal with this.

I appreciate it you all, My wife just brought me a big bourbon, she knows Im pissed....

Im sure ill look back and laugh, but man if this was a stocked tank, I would have been devastated.

I thought so! Teens can't be trusted, even the good ones will screw up. It's what they do and should be expected (lock up the booze, pills, guns, porn, car keys, reef tanks).

I'd still try and get them to admit it. You need to separate them and wear one of the weaker ones down. Also, I would drain and clean the system very well--assume it was contaminated. Who knows what got in there.

My favorite part of this story is that you came home and found them with Cokes on top of the tank AGAIN. Not surprising though. I'm a high school teacher and I see this pretty much daily -- kids make careless mistakes and then REFUSE TO LEARN FROM THEM!!!

Everytime you see them you can drop hints that you know, drop hints that the person who did it (them) will get whats coming to them. Let them slowly go stir crazy over it for months :)

I spoke with there father after I saw the cokes and had a few bourbons. I generally try not to upset the status quo with the inlaws but I was pretty pissed. Hes in the other room yelling at the oldest one who, from what I could hear down the hall, admitted to everything, including stealing MY BOURBON....

As the yelling continues, I heard that the eldest is now grounded for 2 months. I feel slightly vindicated. With inlaws it gets tricky trying to discipline or even accuse. I am pretty happy right now though.

Good thing you said something. Not good when a kid steals your booze. They didn't work hard to buy it, so they shouldn't get any.
