metrokat Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 This little piece of macro has suddenly cropped up in between my acans. It seems to be growing from one of the plugs that the acan came on. What is it and should I get rid of it or try to grow it out? Color is an olive greenish/brownish Texture is smooth, it is not slimy Thank you
Bongo Shrimp Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Looks like some kind of Gelidium. Pic on the right side of this page: http://www.algaebase.org/search/species/de.../?species_id=15
metrokat Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 Hmm, it's not as feathery, more flat leafed.
Bongo Shrimp Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Some Gelidium is pretty flat. IDK I could definitely be wrong.
metrokat Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 okay I'll look up gelidium some more, thank you
patback Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 It sorta looks like the "turf" algae that broke out in my tank. Nip it in the butt, IMO. It jumped from one lone rock, to two, and now every single one of my rocks has some to a degree.
drunkenmonk21 Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I can't see it well on my phone but it may be a type of dictoya
Islandoftiki Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I can't make out the structure too well. Is it perhaps Dictyota as Drunkenmonk21 suggested? Here's a bunch of pics. http://www.horta.uac.pt/species/algae/Dict...a_dichotoma.htm
johnmaloney Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 Looks like some kind of Gelidium. Either way, pain to remove..fairly slow growth unlikely to spread throughout a tank fast but persistent nonetheless.
lakshwadeep Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 It's definitely a red algae (Rhodophyta). Some of them have a sheen, not just green but also blue, that masks the base color.
metrokat Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 Okay, I pulled it out and took pictures.
keydiver Posted August 27, 2012 Posted August 27, 2012 the blades form like fuchea would, but fuchea lacks the wirey holdfast that it appears to have
