JoshuA c
I plan to just put one medium sized rock in my aqua scape. No sand just some rubble to start off the zoa colonies and that's it. I was thinking of doing that at one point, but because the fluvial spec is basically a tall tank (instead of long or shallow) I figured it best to use an aquascape to use the vertical space. xavier1
The pump doesn't fit. It's realllllyyy close. But I can't make it work Link to comment
JoshuA c
Oh, that sucks, but thanks for trying for all of us. Link to comment
xavier1
It was worth a shot. I am thinking of drilling a hole in the back wall and just adding a second source of flow. I will let you know if I do Link to comment
JoshuA c
Yeah, I have a small spare pump incase I want more flow, but I attached it to a spare clip from the ATO and it will hang in the tank. I don't know if I'll use it yet, though. Link to comment
xavier1
The only thing that makes having a tank this small worth it is the idea of making sure it can look really sleek, and I know that a powerhead in the tank will take up a bunch of room and make it look too cluttered for my liking. I have the drill bit for the hole, but I need to do some more planning before I make a permanent hole in the acrylic Link to comment
JoshuA c
Yeah, for me sleek is out the window because of all the cords popping out the back. I need a small tank because I'll be in college. Link to comment
JoshuA c
Ok, I actually think I have everything... I got a bit of H2O2 for dipping the corals even though that may be pointless because the little piece of LR I'm using is coming from my 29 cube witch has bubble algae and aptasia, but we'll see. I got my aqua lifter pump for the ATO and tested it out and I don't think it will lift fresh water from underneath my desk to the tank without the bucket being on stilts which I will invariably kick, knock over, and cause water damage to my dorm room. So i will use a smaller container for the regular school days and it will stick underneath this overhang on my desk (you'll see it better in the pictures that will obviously come). Then I'll use the bucket during Spring Break and will just stick it on my desk because I won't need the space. I think it's a good idea. I just need to see if the pump allows flow through it even when its not on to see if I can have the water level of the bucket above that of the tank. If it does then that is a problem, but if it doesn't, then I'm good to go. I don't think it will because it uses a vacuum to move water so it is probably well sealed. This tank should be getting wet in the following week (hopefully Sunday). Keeping my fingers crossed that nothing comes up! Oh and the final stocking list so far of zoas is: sunny D's, blue hornets, bam bams, BBEB, magicians, and maybe green palys (the big ones). Link to comment
JoshuA c
It's all set up with the seed rock and everything! http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/2014-01-05145808_zps4530806d.jpg.html'> http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/2014-01-05153433_zpsc8689abc.jpg.html'> Link to comment
JoshuA c
A little update. The tank has been up for about a week. I wasn't sure if the LR I had was alive so I went down to the store to get a small piece of LR. They had a $5 frag section so I decided why not get a good sized frag instead of LR because the prices won't be too different. So I got this little beauty: http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/ef2b1919-7051-404a-8dd4-70c6a812835d_zps766c8367.jpg.html'> Hopefully he survives, but if not, the tank will still cycle using this piece. Here's a FTS so far. Not much to look at, but whatever... http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/IMG_20140111_210629_zpsdp0wcc9v.jpg.html'> http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/IMG_20140111_21071_edit_1389503249014_zpsbapibsyx.jpg.html'> Link to comment
JoshuA c
The tank is looking great. Ammonia is almost 0. The only inhabitants are Albino Blizzard Zoas (I don't know why there is a double reference to white in the name) and Magician Palys. I'll be getting BamBams and Blue Hornets tomorrow and I'll post pictures of them when they open. I'm getting a free sample of Coral Frenzy soon and I'm curious to see if it will make any difference. I've heard good things about them. I'm going to wait until all of my zoas come in before I use it so they all get some. Also I'm going to do a really small amount so that i don't introduce a huge amount nitrogen into the tank. If it works well I might invest in a tub of the stuff. I've also been thinking about branching away from my zoa only tank. I've been wrestling with getting some rics from the start, but I may also get an acan or two if there are any cheap ones at Coral Oasis. I think there was a really cheap duncan head at the store also... We'll see. Here are the magicians: http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/20140117_1704320_zpsaznpv7wm.jpg.html'> and a better picture of the "bleached" zoas (the one in the middle has two mouths) http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/IMG_5853_zps1a832c99.jpg.html'> Link to comment
JoshuA c
The tank is still doing well. I have some algae that is annoying so I may look into getting rid of it with snails or crabs. I bough a refractometer to keep tabs on the salinity and it seems to be working well. I did a water change yesterday, also. Here's a better pic of the magicians and the blue hornets: http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/IMG_0085_zpsfd99e79a.jpg.html'> http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/IMG_0084_zps5b3d1b59.jpg.html'> Link to comment
jestep
Do you know what kind of zoas the bleached ones are? Shape looks a lot like nuclear green or purple death palys. Link to comment
JoshuA c
Yeah, they are called Dead... I'm kidding. They are alive and well. They are called Albino Blizzards Link to comment
JoshuA c
Update: Everything looks good... as in still alive. One of my magician polyps (it was a separate polyp from the other 3) was all mad, but he seems to have come around. He has a different pattern of green speckles (its more concentrated) than the others which is kinda cool. Im just tying to fight the algae so I'm going to starve them!! No food, nothing! And they will die on their own. Link to comment
evanski
Nice...will be interested to see further stocking and grow out. Is that hair algae on the hornets? Might want to scrub/peroxide treat it so it doesn't ruin your life later! Link to comment

Might want to scrub/peroxide treat it so it doesn't ruin your life later! I will most likely be getting a lot of new stuff this weekend and I'm looking forward to it. I tried the dip earlier but it didn't seem to work. I have to be careful with them because they aren't fully attached to the rock yet and I don't want to knock them off. I might try again later. I might pick up a snail or two to try and get rid of the hair algae. I realized that I can't starve them out because I use tap water for top offs Link to comment
JoshuA c
I will be getting a couple of frags on Sunday. I am buying corals from a member on this forum and for an awesome price, I am getting a mushroom that looks super cool in the pictures, sunny d's, pink zippers, and maybe some GSP! Can't wait! cocojakes
WOW, this tank has been almost 2 years in the making, I wish I had that patience, I get something in my head, and I have to do it (hence wasting a bunch of money setting up a 30 gallon just to tear it down and throttle back to the 15 gallon that I've had for a few months now. Maybe I'd have saved myself some cash if I had waited longer and realized I didn't need a huge 30 gallon tank, and that a smaller nano was all I could handle Good luck with your tank, I look forward to seeing it once everything grows out Link to comment
JoshuA c
Got some new corals and I'll be getting some more on Tuesday hopefully (pink zippers, sunny D's, a sick orange mushroom, and possibly some GSP all delivered by a member on this forum). I got two acans and a mushroom. I would like an ID on the type of mushroom if anyone knows it. I liked the way it looked and it looks even better in my tank. These are my first acans and I'm excited. Also, I got four little hermit crabs to get rid of the hair algae, and for once, the hermit crabs cooperated with me. They are already clearing the hair algae. I'll post a picture of the patches that they have already opened up. I know they won't get rid of it because it will be in the water and the filter, which is good though: it means they will have food. I'm so happy they are working out. The hermits are doing something!!! Here are three that have already cleared a lot of the algae. http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/IMG_0123_zps5008a149.jpg.html'> http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/790_zps0d346ce9.gif.html'> The mushroom http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/IMG_0132_zps8c6f03bb.jpg.html'> One of the scans, the other isn't opened yet so no pictures, but it is pink and white. http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/IMG_5873_zpse26dc6b0.jpg.html'> FTS (not very good, sorry) http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/JoshuAc00k/media/IMG_0139_zps7aa2048c.jpg.html'> Link to comment
JoshuA c
Some more new corals from Steve (Chicane). Got a sick mushroom, pink zippers, sunny D's and a ton of GSP all for a great price (the GSP he threw in for free)! Worked out great. Everything is in the tank and looks happy. Here is a picture of my other scan that hadn't opened up the other day. Awesome mushroom, pink zippers, and my bam bams. Sunny D's Large snail shell covered in GSP! I can't All I can get is the tap water which makes me sad, but I like my hermit crabs. I was thinking about getting a Pom Pom crab, but IDK. My friends in my dorm like the "moving things" so the hermit crabs were quite fun for them. I might try and get a shrimp and other inverts... suggestions are welcome. Link to comment
