I don't know if you have read this elsewhere, but the ESV Salt has low Mg to start with. This could be why your Alk is staying low. I would buy a Mag test kit, you probably need to be raising your Mg instead of trying to screw around with Alk buffer.

I have to say I disagree that ESV has low mag content. I have tested a fresh batch of salt a couple times and each time I do the Mag is in the 1360 area. The mag level in my tank is about 1400.
