Quite astounding to see how far things have come, I have a nice stack of old fishkeeping books from the '40s, '50s, and '60s that have sections on "how to care for marine fish". Apparently back then, live rock was considered ugly, unlike bleached coral skeletons. That, and some provided instructions on how to mix trace elements with table salt to make your own salt water...
