Tangereen
hehe thanks, i try. question: i'd like to get a tridacna clam sometime down the line. would my tank support a Crocea or Maxima? would i need to upgrade/supplement the lights? Link to comment
cheryl jordan
You should be good with the lighting. Go with a clam bigger than 2 inches. Try to get a Derasa or Maxima as they are the easier clams. Remember they need Calcium so if you are not dosing, regular water changes are a must. You may also have to try different placement, but not to often, give the clam a chance to adjust and decide from there. Link to comment
butcher43366
You might want to put the legs on your light outside of the aquarium edge before it falls in. Other than that nice start! Link to comment
owned162
Looks really great! Keep us updated Link to comment
Tangereen
The legs on the light sit on a pretty sturdy "lip" inside and are in no danger of falling in. I've tried it both inside and out, and inside seems to be much much sturdier. Thank you for the advice though! I really do appreciate it. My clown rests in the front corner of the tank on the sand from time to time, barely swimming to keep upright. He looks healthy, but this behavior freaks me out. I've lost some fish in my time, to the point where my gf called me a "fish killer". I don't want to kill fish! Is he okay? I've tested the water and everything seems to check out - no ammonia/nitrites/nitrates, pH of 8.2, temp 78 F, 480ppm Calcium, 9 dKh, 0 phosphates. Also, I've seen 3 white/clear-ish flatworms with the split tail moving around in the tank eating little white "bugs" (Copepods?). The tank has tons of the little white bugs. This isn't anything I need to worry about, right? Sorry about the paranoid post. It's easy to get obsessive about this, haha. Link to comment
cheryl jordan
No need to worry about the white things running around on the glass, probably copepods, plus your fish like to eat them. Your clownfish behaviors sounds normal, all clowns act weird in one way or another, unless there are visual signs of disease I would not worry about that either. As for the FW if they are white in color you probably have nothing to worry about either, just watch them, cut back on feeding. And as always make sure your SG is good. So everything is good Link to comment
Tangereen
oh yeah, sg 1.025, haha thanks for the reassurance. phew! Link to comment

pismo_reefer
ohhh... 20H's are fuun to build. nice start! Link to comment
Weetabix7
Nice Acan! I personally wouldn't try to keep Clams under just 2 bulbs, I really think you should have 4 bulbs of T5HO before trying a clam in that tank. Link to comment
pismo_reefer
I personally wouldn't try to keep Clams under just 2 bulbs.... +111...... I can tell you from experience. A clam will not do well at all under 2x T5's.... It would have to be directly under the lights, like 4-5" or so. srsly. tha being said.... I cant wait to watch this tank grow out. You really are off to a great start... Link to comment

Tangereen
New tentative addition (well, about a week old anyway). A Flame Angel! 2nd and likely last fish in the tank. He was out and about within 15 minutes of going in, and he went to town on the copepods and the seaweed I rubberbanded to a small rock for him. Even better, he has become buddies with the clownfish and at times they will swim together, which makes me very happy. Now I know that some of these fish will nip at corals, so I've watched him very carefully every day and he seems to leave the coral alone. He does constantly graze the rockwork though, and loves to go in and out between the rocks. The LFS has agreed to let me return him for full credit if he becomes problematic, but it's looking like I'm not gonna need to worry about it. He's an awesome fish! Link to comment

Bamato
Very nice rockwork SWEET Heliofungia Love those guys! As for the clam idea, most have covered it already. You probably need more light. And even with more lamps, you'll want individual reflectors as well. Makes a huge difference in PAR output. And you may want to wait a few more months. You'll be much happier the more prepared and balanced your system is It's coming along really nice though Link to comment
Tangereen
Yeah, I think I'm going to hold off on the clam until the tank matures a bit more, and I can upgrade the lights. I may end up getting another one of the AquaticLife dual T5 fixtures down the line, as they are built to expand. You're right about the reflectors - these lights do have individual reflectors and have a pretty high PAR rating already. I was wondering about cleaning the lamps and reflectors though. I notice that they are getting a little dirty. Any recommendations on cleaning them? Link to comment
