Just to beat a dead horse:

 

Global Industrial offers both acrylic and polystyrene eggcrate. I have to believe that home improvement stores sell polystyrene diffusers.

Shoot! I'm half way through building my rock wall when I accidentally came across this thread. Since it's 2 years old, I'm wondering if there is any new information out there? Should I take all of the rocks off and soak it in vinegar before continuing on. Does spray painting it help? Anyone with experience with this topic?

Honestly, I've never had any problem using it in any of my tanks.

 

I do believe others have though.
