Anyone use sponges?

 

My sump has lots of white sponges that grew in the shadier parts - I don't think they do much for filtration, and grow much slower than chaeto, but they're cool.

 

My sump is simply a ~30g rubbermaid tub (~30"x16" footprint) with ~3" sand bed across the entire tub (no baffles). The return pump sits in a shallow plastic bucket to keep sand out. Lots of LR rubble, chaeto, several species of caulerpa, a few cerith snails, one peppermint shrimp, amphi- and copepods, bristleworms, tiny snails, tiny brittlestars, worms (tons of the ones that form a sand tube with two long white tentacles extended), tube snails...
