Shooting myself in the foot

Should have kept my fuggin mouth shut. I was talking to Kennerd the other day about his recent rescue of a crashing nano and said something to the effect how lucky I've been with my reefs, and after listening to his and Crakeur's stories, I was waiting for the shoe to drop.

Kennerd says, "You just jinxed yourself there." Yep.

Went to Martha's Vinyard the following day for two nights and neglected to consider how damn hot it was about to get. I have no chillers, and rely on the AC in the living room to keep the tanks from overheating during the summer (which was still sitting in storage). Well the temp here got to 100 for the two days I was gone. Got in at 5am the other day to find all my corals hunkered down and the water temp nearing 90. The 46 looked OK (except for the terrified corals), but the 10 looked like someone had poured a quart of milk in it. The beautiful green and purple frogspawn I had in there (which was one of my first corals) had turned to goop and was polluting the water. Had to be at work in an hour so I had no time for a water change. I pulled the frog, ran carbon, threw the AC in the window, and left for work with crossed fingers.

Long story short... the Reef Gods were in my corner. Lost the frog, but that was the only casualty. The temp stays stable with the AC taking the edge off the oppressive heat in my apartment. Did a few w/c's, ran some more carbon, and all is now well. Dodged a bullet here. Next year the ACs go in in April.

lol, sounds like my first heat induced crash. I went to New Orleans for my bachellor party and called my wife (girlfriend at the time of course) and she tells me how hot it is etc. No word about the tank.

I return home to 100 plus weather and get to the apartment and it stinks. The place reeks of death. So cloudy I couldn't see a thing.

I ask my wife if she noticed the smell and she said no but she thought something might be wrong with the tank since it was so cloudy. I asked her why she didn't call the number I left for emergency service and she said "I thought you meant if it was flooding or something bad."

tank was subsequently scrapped and I went 3 years without any tanks.

you got lucky man, real lucky

Don't I know it. And so did you it would seem, considering the bucket full of stuff that will soon be coming your way.

hehe. I just ordered some cleanup critters.

now I need to order fuge goodies from inlandaquatics and I should be in good shape for the next couple of weeks. Next step, dremel attacking the lights from PSL. Bruce thinks I might be able to make some room for the legs by making cut into the endcaps. Didn't have time last night so Sunday evening while the wife watches sex in the city I will bust out the power tools and get to work.

cycle is nearing the end. the cleanup crew will come next week and by then the cycle should be over or damned close.

the lights are the next hurdle. Can't do anything other than fuge macro and sandbed critters and the cleanup crew until I figure out the lights. well, I can do fish but I want to get the lights up and running before that.

I will see what weekends we plan on staying in the city and try and get something going. might manage to send the wife to the beach with her mother and I can stay and play.

My frogspawn melted after a heater malfunction. I can relate to the mess it creates. Not pretty.

It seems spawns are particularly sensitive to heat shock, as I had many things survive (all my fish, hermits, xenia, etc.).

Chitons are also very sensitive (they got wiped out)

Dammit... You guys are making me nervous... ;)

Okay. Today I make the call for a microchiller. One day soon it will get hot here! :D

Finally dumping critters into the 26bow!!! Boo-Yah!!! Are you getting them from JP? I see he has modifed some of his cleanup packages. What'd you get? B)

just picking up some blue legs, a couple scarlets, some sand sifting snails, macro algae etc.

small order.

the main clean up crew (tuxedo, conch, sea hares etc.) won't make it in for another 2 or 3 weeks.

damn, forgot to add the following:

got me a message left from ESPI. he's thinking of coming to town for the 4th so I might actually be making a fish run in the near future. experimental fish run as I don't want to overload the tank and find out it just isn't fish ready yet.

that would suck

Schweeet. Keep me in the loop. Haven't talked to Dave in a while.

As long as we're already veering off topic here: Crak/Ken- you and the wives may be interested in this.

We're going July 11 and have 4-5 couples so far. If you're in I'll tell you the name that our tix are under so we can monopolize a corner of the place.

gonna pass. we are going to a private party at the queens moma for the new ansel adams/max beckman exhibit and then my sister is taking us out to dinner (steaks ummm)

It's been in the 90-95 range here all week. I don't have a chiller, but I checked the tank at night (after all the heat has soaked in) and I'm only up to 84 with the lights on. I've changed the light timing now, so they come on in the early morning, and go off before it gets too hot. Tank is a little flipped from the drastic change, but they'll get over it. Just something to think about to keep your boy's a little cooler!

Yet to get out to Queens MOMA yet.....keep me in the loop on it, as I want to make a run there and hit the Noguchi museum as well.

Well, Mr. Satchmo: "Here endeth the lesson" FWIW: it will cost you less $$ to just maintain a lower temp (generally speaking) with your AC running even while you're away @ 75 or so. Luckily, our house is on a slab, so it's pretty cool. If the central AC kicks off, we can get away with it staying around 75 for 2 days or so, provided we don't pop the windows. Knock on wood you lucky bastage.

Did the "Soap-ranos" thing up here, but I'm not the audience participation-type, but I was kind-of a hoot.

If you guys are around, we're kicking back around the 'cue all day/night on Saturday: family during the day, friends usually stay later on, spark up a nice big fire in the back yard or maybe shoot down to Piermont for some fireworks on the river.

thanks for the offer but we are actually heading to the hamptons for the weekend. our neighbor holds a big july 4th party every year for all his relatives and their kids. Moonwalk, magicians, clowns, petting zoo, real kid friendly. He had a garucci fireworks show one year. He's in the rubbish removal biz or the porn shop biz, depending on the year. Great guy with a very large extended "family" if you get my drift.

Might have tickets for 4 to attend the private party at the moma. turns out we can't do moma and dinner as the sitter can't stay that late so I can pass them up. Let me know if you want em and I'll give you the number to call to rsvp and the tickets will be mailed out.

I'm in, after a quick check on the social calendar. Might have to play fair and go with Satch & co, though. Will let you know ASAP.

Well, I assumed it was the 11th, since he said he was going to pass on the Guinea-palooza shindig.

and in retrospect, I probably should have re-run that thought again, since conversely, you wouldn't be able to make his gig.

Man, I hate Tuesdays.

it's thursday night. isn't that when Don Satchmo is holding his dinner?

If not, I am out anyway. Friday thru sunday from here on in is held out at the beach or at monster in law's place.

If you want the tix, I have 4 so you can all go. It's pretty cool. Private viewing of the exhibit with wine and food (lame food as usual). You would, technically, be a guest of New Sensor (maker of the big muff and other fine musical gear).

I'll get the tix tonight and pm the rsvp number to both of you and you two can decide on what to do with the tix. use em or toss em. don't matter to me.

The dinner is the 11th. I would definitely do the 10th if the tix are available. Get to act like I'm sort of important for a night. Let me know, and thanks. It's not black tie is it?

7/10 is a Thursday, which works great: Kim took off Fridays for the rest of summer, given that she always ends up losing vacation time @ fiscal year end (@6.5 weeks/year, she accrues roughly 1 vacation day for every 8 days worked), since the time doesn't carry over.

What time does it start?

Link to comment

not black tie. the last one I went to (picasso - awesome one) was a saturday and we had dinner plans after so I went in a jacket.

work attire for this one as it's after work but the folks at New Sensor aren't the suit wearing type so pretty much anything will work, other than shorts, ripped jeans etc.

I'll bring tix tomorrow and get the number to you tonight. the spots do fill up fast (might already be booked) so rsvp as soon as you get the number.

Excellent. I'm outta here and won't be back till tomorrow. Ken, if you wouldn't mind RSVPing for me, that would be great. I'll touch base with you if you want to do dinner and drinks afterward.

Thanks a bunch Steve.

I have the numbers and address for you ken. Want me to pop the invites into the mail? Not sure if you need them or not at the moma.
