not sure if I have enough lighting for my 6gal

in the quest to grow SPS and Maximas I am trying to get as much lighting as possible...do you think this is enough?

they are 13W Power compacts each...

you're asking to get flamed.

Thats the most kick ass thing I have ever seen. Try to fit some halides in there as well! And post some pics of that badboy in action, minus the salt creep guy

Whoa! Thats some lighting in that little hood bud. They're gonna see that from space once the top melts off :D

hahaha...don't worry...I have my nomex suit on...

but seriously...isn't that melted tank a nano that tried MH's without any cooling?

I am running only 5 bulbs right now and monitoring heat in the tank as well as my hood...as long as those are not ridiculous and my craftsmanship is okay I think this setup will provide enough light and avoid any disasters...

I still have to clean up some of the wiring...and reroute my power cords so that I can have 2 act as my dawn/dusk lights and the other 4 act as my full daytime lights

hey I could have gone 8....but 6 x 13 = 78W of light for a 6 gal.

the maxima in my tank was doing well with 4 PC...but now it has opened up even more and shows some more color...

If this light setup is stable in a couple months I may want to try my hand at some SPS....

If this mistake has been made before let me know...I don't know if my setup and that MH is comprable since MH are so much more powerful and heat producing PCs...

I am open to listen if someone has a very logical and rational explaination why this setup is 100% doomed to fail...shoot...all I have to do is flip a switch and cut my light setup in half...

not trying to ruffle feathers...but I think this will help me try my hand at more specimens that might need more lighting...plus it is pretty cool

BTW what is the "salt creep guy"

mmkay um..

1. those gx23 sockets you got there are not made water-resistant... let alone salt-resistant (and judging by your picture i think you have some splashage issues)

2. those twisty things you joined your wires with are not to moisture/salt friendly either (mmm sparkies)

3. the configuration of the top (front) 4-bulb set is not at all efficient. half of the light is bouncing around in weird dirrections and back into the bulb

EDIT: oh is this... this tank?

wow. year old? nice.

ok...good suggestions

1) yeah I noticed the splashing too...I've corrected that. My spray bar was pointed slightly upwards and was splashing the hood...and I think I may use some thin plexiglass to sperate the lights from the tank itself

2) yeah I wondered about the sockets and the connectors. A&H lights never mentioned anything about the sockets...for the twist connectors I plan to seal them...maybe with some liquid electrical tape or shrink tubing...do you have any suggestions to protect the sockets?

3) again something I thought of...I know the reflectors were specifically designed for one bulb...but then that reduces my tank to three 13W bulbs...hardly enough to grow some of the speicmens I like...so I sacrificed efficiency for wattage gain

do you think it is so inefficient that it would be better to go back to 2?

and yes that is my tank...like I said the tank crashed last year...and this new setup is about 4 months old

I do have a refugium 10gal so I hope that cuts down on heating issues as well as making the tank more stable

here is a recent pic...the toadstool looks funky cuz I just cleaned the front

the sun polyps are a new edition and opened up last night for the first time

keep em coming...It's good to hear from the more experienced nanoers

hth gl.? not sure what that means

IMO...... I think you should graduate to a glass tank. For $9.99 at petco, you can move all your life to a new 10G tank and have unlimited lighting options. If you search though their stock, one may have plate glass base that you could drill and move that spray bar over to. It would suck to loose all your life to a electric fault or god forbid a fire :(

Link to comment

Wow, that is....uh....impressive...

Looks like a rice rocket version of a nano tank.

What caused your tank to crash the last time?

Maybe you should just get a larger tank (glass as advised above) with a MH, instead of risking meltdown with that thing.

I bet you are into modifying everything you own...I am like that too. The car, the computer, cell phone...hahaha.

Good luck !

dude...why do you have to call is rice rocket...??

btw I do own a 96 civic...and I think I have tastfully upgraded it with undertray lighting and a supra wing...

I don't know why everytime anyone wants to customize something they own people have to make fun of if....I think the import market is the next big thing...bling bling

the tank crashed last time cuz i didn't have enough light for the animals I wanted to have in my tank and they died....I had a know it all friend who was guiding, but after finding this board I found out how little he knew

you don't seem to have any constructive suggestions on my current setup...no I don't want to start a brand new setup....

anyone have suggestions???

Don't worry I'm not hating on yoru nano or your civic. Got nothing but love for you...

I only suggested you get a glass tank setup like hicksonj above did. If you are not open to suggestions, whether good or bad, whats the point of posting on a public board like this...

Don't be a hater.

Link to comment

dude...step off

you are really crowding my thread...just repeating what other members have said already...

don't you have any new suggestions??

do you even have a nano????

why are you being such a hater?

I repeat anyone have USEFUL comment unlike Mr. supa ####### Santa Klaus???

OK why are you getting mad at ppl or giving there opinions? In my own opinion i would go with a glass tanks also then you could possiably straighten out that lighting disaster under that eclipse hood. Unless of course you just want to live dangerous and have your house burn down because of your tank? I dont think mommy and daddy would apprciate that very much? WOULD THEY?

Your tank looks good but would be so much safer with a glass tank and custom canopy with a splash gaurd over all those lights, you can already see salt creep and slash on the lights not good. Ok thats my 2 cents

GET A GLASS TANK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Link to comment

there is nothing wrong with the acrylic tanks.

82SC does not NEED a new glass tank.

there is nothing wrong with modified eclipse hoods as long as the proper precautions are taken.

Well said adin. My retrofitted Eclipse, properly wired with the CSL kit and a darn fine drip loop :) is quite nice.

That being said, I'll soon be setting up my c-marks all glass tank to take the plunge into dueling nanos.

i agree fully but from the looks of it, it dont look at all done proper or with many precautions. IMO it looks like a fire waiting to happen. I have nothing against the tank it looks real nice and everything looks real happy, just worried about someone losing their tank, home or even life from something so silly.

ok...you guys are very helpful...

I just don't like this supa Jerk Suck Kock guy...

but since I am a beginner nanoer and I think my tank has some really happy and cool specimens in there can you give me suggestions??

I guess I am in the more is better mentality...I plan to clean up the wiring and seal all possible problem areas...

I plan to cover the top of the tank to prevent splash and salt creep (now I get it) and protect from any mishaps

and I think I will be installing a fan or 2 for the warm winter months

but what about the light configuration...is it too much or will this set up work once I've cleaned it up and made it safe??

I appreciate you guys pointing out all my bone head errors but no one seems to give me suggestions or solutions???

thanks again

and Supa Japanese Sock Kisser...I am glad you are teaching your kids good manners...I am sure you were an A.D.H.D. freakish kid. probably a pyro and torturing little animals looking at your porn stash all day long...why don't you go drive you fake fast cars you have on your computer from all those wasted hours of gran turismo 3...talking as if you know anything from playing a stupid video game...i bet you are a 12 year old without a driver's license

d00d chill out, i think that supa was just trying to help you out. i dont think he meant to offend you with the rice rocket comment. people are just trying to help you out, but you are either taking things the wrong way or way overly sensitive. no need for the name calling and what not. JMO.....

fwiw, that melted tank was using a single 32w CSL smartlite retro. No water resistant endcap, and screw cap wiring.

I'd hate to hear that your hood caught on fire. As long as you make a splash guard and sauder/wrap the wire connections you should be ok.

I feel like you could get better results with a metal halide though, for the things you want to keep. PetSupplyLiquidator could probably make a nice 70w or 150w hood to sit ontop of the eclipse tank to replace the existing hood.

I am sure you were an A.D.H.D.

you need to watch wtf your saying and adhd isnt something that you can just say to make fun of ppl. i have it so next time you wanna post somthing like a retard think you f****** retard. and you wanna know the truth your a total jackass for tryn to fit all the crap in the hood and you should have thought it through which it is pretty logical you didnt or elese you wouldnt have been stupid enough to put all that crap in the hood when none of it is water or salt proof. sit down shut up and if you dont like it leave,Chris

Dood you guys, to tell you the truth....I personally don't consider anything bigger then a 8 gallon to be a nano! For got sakes I have a .5 (1/2) gallon tank....It's not much but its a nano...

CJM You F****** need to watch what you say ass wipe...

CJM: "retard think you f****** retard"

I am a retard...and it is really offensive when people call me a retard on a anonymoys BBS...I would have thought your mom would have taught you better then that!!!

I think you should be careful what you say because there are alot of us retards out there...and it just aint polite to call us for what we are...I am saying this for all the retards who don't have a voice on this nano BBS

And so what if I didn't think it through...its cuz I am a retard...so cut me some slack...that is why I posted this thread to ask the opinions of less retarded folk...since I cut you slack for your horrible spelling skills and atrocious grammer and syntax, cut me some slack on my retarded nano skills...

anyone have anything constructive??? I will post results when I do make the improvements...I am still curious if the 4 light set up is SO inefficient that I should just cut it back to 2...

good thing SupaJSK is no where to be seen...he must have ran off to take his ritalin...
