Possible to do this?

Want to setup a shallow AIO tank, stocking with only clams. However many will fit inside leaving 2" between for growth. Dosing pump and 30x +- turnover. Kessil for lighting. Thinking no more than 5-8 gallons. Sand bottom with rock in back for filtration. Yes, I will keep my salinity and temp consistent. Yes, I will keep all other parameters in check. Yes, I know how much calcium and alk will be taken out of tank. Thoughts?

Sounds sexy! There are several shallow AIO frag tanks that should suit your needs.

As an alternative to rock in the back for filtration, check out MarinePure. It is a very porous ceramic that comes in blocks or balls. I used the balls in the back of my AIO frag tank as they were easy to move around to suck up any detritus that got back there.

What kind of clams? Maxima and croceas grow slow enough that this would work if you have bright enough lighting. However, derasas and squamosas would outgrow a 5-8 tank pretty quickly and definitely would need more than 2" between then for growth space. Also have you taken into consideration that you probably want to put a fish in this tank to provide some nutrients. Clams don't do well at all if the water is too clean, which would be the case if the tank is nothing but clams.

Thinking maybe 20x12x6 AIO and only maxima. 3-4" clams. Hadn't even thought about fish.

Do you have a 2nd tank with fish in it? Some clam only tanks use dirty water from fish tanks for water changes. Clams love fish poop. Otherwise plumbing it into a larger system would also fix that issue.

I do have an existing tank, but it is 10g and holds only one fish.
