ceemo
Hi Guys and Gals, Is this a baddy? It came in with an acro frga and monti frag, and was free floating in bagged water. I'm thinking its an acro eating spider - I'll be dipping anyway, but just wanted to check in case it was just an ugly good guy that deserved to live!! markalot
Acro spider, kill it with prejudice. Do you have Bayer for dipping? If not read up on it, best dip for acros. Honestly it might be time to either QT the corals or toss and start over. Not sure on the lifecycle of acro spiders but there may be eggs. Link to comment
ceemo
Thanks for the confirmation I've dipped for 15 mins with dettol, and another 1 came off during the process. This is my first acro frag - not sure if its worth keeping or not now!! ...... milli by Colin Ormston, on Flickr Link to comment
gulfsurfer101
You'll be fine but you might want to tell the person you got it off of before they loose lots of livestock. Link to comment
Sunstar
I am going to hijack this thread with a question, since I want to get SPS, and forewarned is forearmed, or something like that. The only SPS I have is a small bit of montipora. I dip using Coral RX/Revive. Someoen told me bayers, and now I see mention of dettol. What are the options/best options for dipping SPS - why? ceemo: Go over it with a magnifying glass and tweezers, just to be sure. Link to comment

What are the options/best options for dipping SPS - why? Ingredients are different. Revive tends to be harsh on SPS, Coral Rx is great for some people and iffy for some (I bought it once, the lid never closed correctly and it didn't quite get everything so I avoided it just in case). I'm using RPS All Out and it's done pretty well, but my purchases weren't SPS heavy. A lot of dips are just totally useless against red bugs, flatworms, nudibranchs, etc. Things that target bugs specifically, like Bayer, are good for those exceptions. Bayer also happens to be super gentle on SPS in a lot of people's experience; they've been able to dip for extended amounts of time without harm to the coral. Link to comment
ceemo
I've not come across Bayer in the UK - not sure if we can even get it over here. Most people suggest Dettol as a cheaper but equally efective alternative to Coral RX. I'm going to take the frag off its plug (ceramic tile) as well just to be on the safe side! I've passed on a message and photos to the vendor, so hopefully he'll be able to check his stock..... Thanks for all the help !! Link to comment
gulfsurfer101
See I've never even heard of dettol but for anyonevin the states you can drive to you local home depot and buy a bottle of bayer advanced all insect killer and you can dip everything from zoas to sps. It's relatively cheap considering what it costs for coral dip. Now if you say that one other spider fell off during a dip I would qt that frag and keep an eye out for eggs or hatchlings. Repeat the dip in a few days before adding it to your system. But since you don't have any other sps you my bee able to get away with out qt'n just take out the coral and repeat the dip in a couple of days. Link to comment

Dettol is mostly antibacterial AFAIK, I mean you can have a bath with it, gargle with it, and it's an antiseptic for wounds. While it wont harm your coral (I hope), it's not really a parasite killer. Look into coral dips. Link to comment

Just so you know RPS All Out is Bayer that was rebottled and died blue with tea tree oil. The guy who owns the brand(matt) is being sued for it. I could give you more info but it would take me hours to type it all. It really is a mess. That said it is Bayer so it is efficient haha Link to comment

ceemo
Thanks for all your input. Kat, thanks for your sage words of wisdom! Apart from Coral RX what else would you suggest - Lugols, Revive - what do you use? Certainly can't seem to find a UK supplier of the specific type of Bayers that Markalot mentioned ('Bayer Advanced complete insect killer for soil and turf concentrate' - right?) Previously, I'd looked into various products, and from what I recall the consensus over on this side of the pond was that Coral RX was pretty much a re-branded / re-packaged version of Dettol, albeit priced at a premium - hence why I'v been using it so far. Always happy to learn of alternative views and approaches!! Thanks again all - I still find it amazing that I can call on all this knowledge and experience across oceans and continents from my little piece of Scotland!! Col Link to comment
