rjaungst
I understand the pros and cons of each but I really can't pick. I Havent started my set up and i understand this is the most important part of keeping the clam, other than great water parameters. Any advice on which the clam would do better with? Its going to be in a 17.8 gallon rectangle. Link to comment
Acropora793
I have never used MH before but I use LEDs now and have a crocea and maxima. Both have great color and growth, but I have no experience with MH to tell you what is better Link to comment
rjaungst
Thank you! Any specific brand you would recommend for LED? Link to comment
jedimasterben
Don't cheap out is all I'm gonna say if you're thinking LED. Use a respected and tested brand. Regardless of what the light source is, the intensity is what matters. Link to comment
rjaungst
Im thinking of spending at least $400 on my lights. Whats a good target intensity to shoot for? Link to comment
Cameron6796
LEDs dont need bulb replacement therefore the mh will be less efficeint and require more bulbs if you estimate the cost of the mh fixture plus a few years of bulbs the LEDs are way better Link to comment
rjaungst
It sounds like LED is definately the way to go, I was thinking of the AquaIllumination Hydra LED system. Link to comment
jedimasterben
I would stay away from the Hydra. I recommend teh Maxspect R420R. Link to comment
Cameron6796
What's wrong with the hydra Link to comment
rjaungst
The reviews on the Maxspect look great! Thank you so much. Link to comment
jedimasterben
What's wrong with the hydra Cool white LEDs, unnecessary 530nm and 660nm LEDs mostly. The fact that you need to pay a boatload extra to get custom pucks just adds to reasons not to get one. Link to comment
Cameron6796
Okay then what do you recomeend Link to comment
rjaungst
I would stay away from the Hydra. I recommend teh Maxspect R420R. Link to comment
Cameron6796
Sorry other then maxspecttheir sleek i just want full spectrum so thats why i guess i don't see problem with the hydra Link to comment
jedimasterben
What do you consider full spectrum, and how would the R420R not fall into that category? Link to comment
Cameron6796
Lighting that covers the full spectrum reds blues uv It technically does but it only has the blues and whites to do so im not trying to slam the razor its a sleek light and its still an option its just for the size of the hydra compared to the razor i like the hydra more plus it gives off amazing colours which is what I like and am looking for Link to comment
jedimasterben
I think you need to do a little more research into what full spectrum is, or read the specs on the R420R. Link to comment
Cameron6796
I know what full spectrum is i was just saying the razor has warm and cool white , blue , royal blue and super actinic where as hydra has cool white ,red ,green royal blue, deep blue, violet and uv which i like the look of not that its actually complete full spectrum its just more variety In conclusion you think that the 530nm and 660nm aren't Necessary where I like them so honestly us bickering isnt really solving anything we each have personal preference and thats how it is most likely going to stay Link to comment
rjaungst
i appreciate the different points of view. thanks guys! Link to comment

masterbuilder
I don't have a dog in this fight...but...the whites in the Maxspect (and several other brands) have the reds and greens. The spectrum claims from both manufactures is a matter of marketing and semantics....both cover similar bands of the spectrum. Either one will do the job wonderfully for your clam. The Hydra and the Maxspect are both nice fixtures, its really just the aesthetics between these two. Pick the LED you like. BTW...No way I would ever go back to MH..ever. Did I say EVER! p.s. there is no such thing a UV LEDs. They are true violets. Again marketing and semantics. Link to comment
Bill Nye
I have had mostly MH and LEDs lighting in my reefing career. I preferred LED tbh but you need full spectrum. I just switched to a t5 unit (first time with t5) and I have to say its my favorite so far. No shimmer but the color you can get even with a 4 bulb set up is better than LED/MH imo. My dream unit would be a ATI powermodule .... t5 + led = win Link to comment
rjaungst
this might be a dumb question but what do you mean by shimmer? im sold on not getting MH, what are the pros of T5? Link to comment
