ScooobaSteve
Just in case anybody else has considered using this. Ignore the ammonia reading -- really old bottle of ammonia test reagent... Link to comment
Angel<3Nanos
That's actually not that bad. Link to comment

kilrin
As a petco employee, it is not the best salt mix out there. But for the price, and the qauntity of it. It's pretty decent. Although from the three jugs I have tested in my store, The SG is really high. Normally it reads at about 1.023-1.024 Link to comment
ScooobaSteve
Yeah of the total 6-7 boxes I've gone through, those numbers are only from one so your mileage may vary. Link to comment
chicagoreef
Kilrin - i now buy petco salt water from a dispenser they set up earlier in the year. Any insight into the salt brand they use? Link to comment
Gooburz
The Petco brand saltwater is processed from a Cali company and has always had good reviews and is the cheapest by far. I've used it a few times in a pinch because all you have to do is heat it up and its good to go. Link to comment
chicagoreef
I was using the boxed water until my local petco installed a salt water dispenser. Now I just bring in my 5 gallon jugs and fill up. Link to comment
kilrin
Well, I know all my store has access to is instant ocean salt. Not even the reef stuff. But it is a pretty good quality sslt. Our reef tanks are doing phenominal...(If only they would give me proper lighting...) Link to comment
chicagoreef
Kilrin - thanks for the insight and best of luck on keeping those tanks clean and healthy. My local petco's tanks have gone downhill by a lot in the past year. They used to have a beautiful and clean frag tank that is now overrun with a pulsing xenia type coral. The other tanks seem to all have a dead fish in them. I was hoping to use a 25% off coupon for a cleaner shrimp, but didnt want to risk it even though the shrimp seem pretty happy and healthy eating the dead fish. Link to comment

Don't think I think petco is the best or anything by all means. What store is it if you don't mind my asking? My store is very elitist in terms of our animal care, including fish. The frag tank program at a lot of petcos sucks because the aquatic specialist isn't... Commited? To his or her job. And while they do train people how to do things somewhat with fish, it's not enough by anymeans to reliably run a salt tank. Lots of time outside of work has to be done in the research of the hobby. Also, petco has a rule about killing any living creature (including corals) unless it is cruel to keep it alive. So that xenia problem, unfortunatley, without it being sold (Which I would 90% off any menace like that in a heart beat to keep my tank alive) can't just be cut and thrown out. D= But i assure you, not all Petcos will let their tanks run rampant. Link to comment
ScooobaSteve
Wait, your Petco's have frag tanks? If I asked my local one about frags I'm pretty certain I'd get that confused puppy look... Link to comment
kilrin
My store does not have a frag tank. However, I made sure we had correct lighting in our main tanks to allow us to get in special colonies of corals and things. So 50$ coral colonies and stuff. But I wish we had a frag tank. Thinking about getting a frag rack and sticking it in a tank. Have a few customers that have frags that they were wanting to bring in. So maybe that wouldn't be a bad idea. But yea. If you call a petco store, and ask them if any stores in the district have "magnet" status for aquatics, that will ensure that they have a frag tank. Link to comment
Chris!
I used this water when I 1st started. It was more expensive then just mixing my own (which was why I stopped using it when I moved to a 75g from a 20g), but I never had any issues keeping stuff alive so it couldn't have been to bad. Nocturnal
Good to know about the Petco salt. Their retail price for the good stuff is way too high to justify buying in a pinch, but their brand is much cheaper. Wait, your Petco's have frag tanks? If I asked my local one about frags I'm pretty certain I'd get that confused puppy look... Yeah, I was surprised to hear that also. My store seems to have pretty healthy fish, and maybe a sad looking leather coral or anemone here and there but that's it. Of course we have several excellent local reef stores. Link to comment
pgrVII
I've run the petco saltwater exclusively in my nanocube since day one. Good stuff, especially since we usually get a $5 off thing once a month I end up paying like $7. Cheap and convenient. I usually do a 5 gallon change once a month. Link to comment

metrokat
I recommend Petco Ocean water to any nano tank owner. My buddy uses it exclusively even now, his tank is 3 years old, biocube 29. When your water change is ~2-3 g a week, one of these can last 3 months. Any larger and the cost might become prohibitive. I used this water for about 6-8 months myself Link to comment

I have only seen them in 5gal boxes which last me about 2-3 weeks with my 12gal JBJ. But would you believe it -- going thru the basement to pack away all the Christmas stuff and found a 5-stage RODI I forgot I bought years ago and used once before I moved. Off topic, but think the filters are still good to go? Never pulled me from the canisters apparently... Link to comment
Megaherz
I have been using it 100% in my pico tank and have not had any issues yet, (going on 2 months or so) Link to comment
