New 5 Gallon Dumpster Nano

I recently found a 5 gallon tank sitting beside the dumpster. I couldn't resist picking it up. I tested it for leaks and all was good. I decided to try a Nano again and to teach my kids about it. I've had several of them years ago. So, I put in 10 pounds of live sand, and 6 lbs. of live rock. I had an old Marineland Led light from years ago. I cut the tank lid to fit it and a Aqueon hang on the back filter that I bought. I know not to use the filter that comes with it. I bought some Fluval Biomax to put in there instead. Is that ok? I also purchased a small Tetra H10 50 watt submersible heater, a Top Fin powerhead 30, a small mag-float for cleaning and a thermometer. I use a refractometer for testing the salt levels. I plan on a small cleaning crew, some simple easy corals to start with, and maybe a small fish.

Any suggestions are welcome. :) I plan on weekly one gallon water changes. Also, I bought a black background to hide all of the equipment. How long should I wait for the cleaning crew? Corals? A Fish? I've been out of the hobby for a while and can't remember everything. I've seen some bristle worms, a snail, a starfish and plenty of feather dusters on the smaller rock on the right.

Give it a week or so and you can add your clean up crew. I would recommend adding a few crabs and snails at a time over the course of a few weeks instead of all at once. Not like you will need many for the tank as it is :-). I would recommend picking some some sort of live bacteria to help seed the tank as your live rock doesn't look all that "live". It will help either way. Fritz 9 and Brightwell microbacter 7 are both good. After 2-3 weeks you should be good to add your first fish but test your water and make sure no ammonia or nitrite remains as those will kill your fish. Also give it about 2 weeks and you can start adding some soft coral. Other than that it looks like a fun little setup!

Will definitely be a fun project for you and the kids. I've also started a tank similar in size(Fluval Edge 6 gallon). I'll be watching this as it develops.

The rock on the right is definitely more "live" than the other one. It's covered in feather dusters. I've seen several bristle worms and a small snail as well.
