clams that have a 'foot' don't shed their 'foot'. tridacnas anchor themselves to a place with their byssal gland. (fleshy butt) the gland emits threads that attach onto the substrate, like spiderman webbing.

 

occasionally, clams may move for some reason though. not happy, needs more room, wants a better view, etc. i believe this is the event i described recently in my tank thread (Pico Sub-Forum), using the picture above. good or bad depends on the specific situation though imo.
