After looking at both pics, it looks like it might be some type of bivalve - a muscle perhaps??

Lakswadeep (sp?) (sorry) said mine looked like brachiopods and after some research I think he's absolutely right. I can't see the little "tongue" things in mine but the body shape looks the same.

Do they suck in fast when something scares them and then slowly open again?

Holy crap, I've been wondering what I had. It's like a clam but can suck back into the rock when it's scared.
