x3cookiex3 Posted June 7, 2006 well i would think its a rock crab its found mostly on live rock hitch hiker. im sure there are those who know. As for me I think its cute .. I would put it in a QT until you know what it is. some have been known to eat coral & fish. Quote Link to comment
Coon Posted June 7, 2006 Yeah, I like it too. I'm not going to thrash it, but house it in a compartment of my "bates motel" of weirdos to come. "Rock crab", huh? Anyone know any more specific...? Quote Link to comment
dreamersdisease Posted June 7, 2006 red eyed xanthid crab. common hitchhiker on fiji live rock. not reef safe at all and it will kill your fish. i keep mine in my sump/refugium. pretty interesting to watch, but toxic so watch your fingers!! Quote Link to comment
Coon Posted June 7, 2006 Dreamersdisease, thank You for the ID. I suppose Bali is close enough to Fiji, that's where my LR came from. Mini_GBR: Well I found catching it actually quite a pain... For about a month I tried various sophisticated baited crabtraps, to no succes. I actually started to believe that the crab is not interested in shrimp, fish or any other meaty food. It was more interested in just fiddling with rock than the baits right next to it. In the end I just went medieval on it's ass and waited for it to come out of hiding at night and caught it with a net. Quote Link to comment
Mini_GBR Posted June 7, 2006 oic, so nothin fancy then. But you saw this crab on numerous occasions befre actually getting it. I found a molt of only the pincher, so I think I have one. I can't tell though, and I can't figure out how to know if I have one or not. Quote Link to comment
Coon Posted June 7, 2006 Yes, I did see it almost every night and sometimes during the day, 'cause it chose to call quite a big hole in the rock it's home. Also, I'm actually half way there at this point, becouse there is another, smaller crab (similar to this) in my nano. And I do see your problem, I've only seen this other guy a few times. I think I will catch it when I upgrade the nano in the not so distant future. Quote Link to comment
Willow771 Posted June 7, 2006 We just ended up waiting until it crawled into a rock, pulled the whole rock out of the tank and pried it out with some dentist tooth pickers Quote Link to comment
Coon Posted June 8, 2006 Sounds like a very smart thing to do, whenever you actually see the crab. Quote Link to comment
