SoS
I've had this thing in my tank for months and I rarely see him on the glass. Well this time he was on the back glass and I got a pretty decent picture. The more I look at it the less I'm convinced its a chiton. Anybody got a clue? Link to comment
wetworx101
Looks like a variety of what I've heard called a 'sea-hare', a variety of sea slug. They are usually very prolific when mates are available and eat all non-macro algae. They are sold sometimes online and at the LFSs for their algae cleaning abilities, kind of like a snail for a freshwater tank. Link to comment
sjpresley
Looks like a Stomatella to me. Is it about 1/8-1/4" long, moving pretty quickly (for a snail)? Link to comment
SoS
its about half an inch and it does fly across the glass. I've seen him move the whole length of the 55 gallon in a few minutes. Link to comment
sjpresley
Yeah, I meant the shell length...so with the foot 1/2" is about right. They don't get much bigger than this, they can reproduce quickly in your tank, and should be mostly nocturnal. If you like them, don't get any Lysmata shrimp, chances are they eat the lot. I'm pretty sure the specific epithet is varia (Stomatella varia), and these guys are extremely variable in color. Link to comment
