smoothoper8ter
hello all.. i have experience with larger salt water tanks, that were fish only, but i am new to the nano. I was wondering if mandarin's are ok for the nano? if not what fish would you recremend? my live rock has been untouched in my tank for over 2 years. I am also using the eclipse 12 gallon, with a compact flouresent (spelling) what would be some good low light corals, for a rookie to try out ? last one are clam's ok for nano's ? any reply is greatly appreciated Rory:) Link to comment
Keng Yew, Leong
Of course not.Mandarins arent ok,they have not enough to feed on in a nano.Damsels, clowns and gobies(not the hard to feed type) are ok.The corals you can keep depends on your lighting.Im not gonna touch anything on the intensity, spectrum etc about lighting here.Do a search on that.A rough guide is around 3-5 watts per gallon for softies. If you have 3 watts, stick to mushrooms and polyps.Hard corals need more light.Do remember that coral placement is important too.Place the high light corals high on top of the tank and vice versa. For clams look around the advanced topics, you will find your answer. They are kinda hard to keep and not to mention expensive. kimura
Keng Yew, is right on the money. As far the live rock being untouched, I'm not understanding that. So you had Fish with Live Rock? Oh and clams, I'd wait awhile till you had a more mature tank. But please do a search, there are now many here who've been able to keep small clams. But be warned they are very difficult to keep. coralreeferkim
hi smoothoper8ter-First off I need to say I"m extremely new to the idea of nano-reefs. However, having said that I can tell you that I have a 55g reef tank with (by anyone's standards) REALLY low light. I have 2 40 w flourescents, one actinic and one 50/50. I've had the following corals for at least a year and all are doing well: a pulsing Xenia (has reproduced several times), capnella (has quadrupled in size), a red chile coral, discoma hairy metallic and various colored ricordia shrooms, finger leather, purple star polyps, brown and green polyps, yellow polyps, and as far as LPS, I have a cynarina, pink-tipped frogspawn, fox, and a really awesome neon calaustrea (glows beautifully under actinic). I also keep a yellow branching gorgonia under that light. I think I've been lucky with the lights because I dose at least daily with live phytoplankton (also have scallop and X-mas tree worms who need it too). Like I said, I don't know @#$% about nanos, but these are pretty low light corals in my experience. Good luck to you! Link to comment
zizmans
I've heard mixed advice on getting a pygmy angel. Your views? Link to comment

coralreeferkim
sorry I posted twice folks, my inet sux! On the question of pigmy angels, imo the reason you get conflicting advice is because pygmys are reef safe-sometimes, it really depends on the individual fish! I knew I wanted a coral beauty or a flame angel when I set up my reef, and I had sooo many different opinions to deal with. I finally settled on a particular coral beauty that had fabulous colors and I couldn't resist. I've been pretty lucky with mine, it nips at my gorgonia polyps and X-mas worms occasionally, but they are too quick for her. (I've named her Miss Piggy cuz you'd think I never feed my fish!) Other c.b.'s are notorious for eating everything, I've heard! Same with flames, I guess lemon peels are good, or so I've heard, I don't know about in a nano though, they eat sooo much, and then of course, they have to poop a lot!!! Link to comment
