Well, you've gotta budget for lights - figure on at least $200 to get a good kit into your eclipse hood.

Powerhead $15

bag o salt $20

heater $20

test kit $30

live rock $50

live sand $20

So, $200 w/ lights and $155 for other stuff. Maybe you should just use existing lights and keep zooanthids, but pretty sure you need to buy everything else. Save $20/week...read articles and boards here...in 2 months, you'll have enough money to get you started...you'll be a fahreeking genius.

Well I have the Heater, sand, salt. Am going out to day to invest in some fiji live rock and the appropriate bulb for my lighting. From there I will be planning what exactly can servive with my lighting. If Zooanthids will live I will be a happy man, any other advice is welcome

hey nathan-

if you haven't done so already make sure you get a hydrometer (sorry if this is a duh). you can really do pretty well with an eclipse hood, and ten gallon tank...you could invest in a good spectrum 15W normal output fluorescent bulb but this is what i would recommend. you'd wind up spending prolly at least $20 for that bulb...hold onto that cash! your live rock won't mind the lighting spectrum at all-and its prolly gonna be in the tank all by its lonesome for three weeks minimum, right? its when you start putting photosynthetic inverts in that the light matters. for $50 you can get a CSL 32W smartlite that will allow you to keep a good variety of critters. they retrofit into your hood beautifully-were designed for it in fact. seriously if you were to try the single NO flo you'd have a hard time keeping your aminals happy. i'll send you a powerhead, seriously pm me. take the money you would have spent on the powerhead and replacement NO flo bulb and buy the smartlite, i'll even look for the best deal online for ya. and like aj said do lotsa research in the meantime. it'll save you some cash. you don't have to be a millionaire to succeed in this hobby. just be responsible and take good care of the aminals you carefully selected, you'll love it!

I have a 12-gal Marineland eclipse for a year. Has been successful with minor personal learning glitches of mine. Have starfish, maroon clown, live rock, feather duster, red-legged hermit crab, etc. Two things I've learned recently - I have not done my water changes quite accurately so nitrates high, and can take carbon filter out and put filtering material in place so can add iodine, calcium, etc. Very pleased with the eclipse and it was not too expensive. Use the regular light with it and only do low-light corals.

I have a 12 gallon eclipse and all I changed on it was I added another 13W Power compact light in the hood...I added what's called a bookworm light which I got at a hardware store and glued it in with some epoxy glue. If you want to start the cycle add a ckean up crew (snails and crabs) and add your live rock. I have zoos and mushroom corals even xenia and green star polyps and an octobubble coral. I also have a false percula fish. It won't take long to cycle in that small a tank. I change the water every week 1 gallon a week. I don't use the wheel which came with the eclipse I have a powerhead and a carbon filter. No heater since I noticed the water temp stays the same no matter what. :)

Disregard the previous post!

Do not stock your tank before its cycled. Do not use fish to cycle your tank. Do not stock your tank till after the cycle and after you have read up on a few things. Add sand/water/rock - let cycle. After cycle, add a clean up crew. After that read some of the board. Then start choosing your inhabitants.

Vanessa-

Don't give out bad/incorrect information. BAD BAD BAD OF YOU!

Reefmatrix

Thanks for scolding me in that manner of type I really enjoy it please give me more!!!! If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all. All I know, which I am not claiming to be the reef-goddess of knowledge, is that there are many ways to achieve the same result in the nano-reef world as seen by hundreds on this website when they talk about how they set up their tank and how well it's running for them. All I said was to add LR and a clean up crew which for that size tank would probably entail a couple snails and a crab. Don't be so insulting on your posts! Negative criticism doesn't get you far. You have your way of setting up a tank and I am sure there are people out there that may disagree with how you set up your tank or what you keep in your tank (i.e.- anenomes in a nano which you have). So please be nice when you write posts! Don't be so negative to people with different opinions!!!

Now now.. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

I was just explaining that adding LIVING CREATURES to an uncycled tank is a REEFING NO NO!

Ask anyone!

If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all.

From your previous posts on a not so far away thread we had, you might wanna rethink that :)

Oh - LEAVE MY ANEMONES OUT OF THIS!!

seems you and dave espi have the same taste in women...

;)

And if you read that post again you'll see I was telling someone who was being mean to ease up off of a guy who wanted a simple reply to his question without being insulted for asking it.

and then all hell broke loose on that post...I admit I enjoy a little smart azzed bantering...but then 14 years olds got in on the action and that is a no no for minors to talk like that. :

Wow what have I started here...lol, I was just wondering is all. From what I have read since my post is that it is cruel to add fish to a brand new tank. So I am going to have to take reefmatrix's advice. Sorry Vanessa

not bitter, just fed up with people who use avatars that have absolutely nothing to do with FISH! So tell me what exactly does his avatar, which shows a large, breasted cartoon woman running, have to do with a reef website? NOTHING! I learned my lesson and I won't speak for all women but when it comes to pictures like reefmatrix's that are obviously over-exploiting a woman's anatomy for men's enjoyment it gets annoying. If I wanted to see something like that I would have gone to a sex/porno website. There are minors that also use this website which I don't think they should be exposed to pictures like that either! I doubt their parents realize that they can access sexual images by surfing a reef/fish website...do you?
