How important is it for a light to be used in conjuncion with a HOB refugium. im planning on setting up a 10g with the thought of buying a aquafuge or making one.

thanks in advance

the macro algae in the fuge will need some light. some macros need less light than others but I wouldn't go without a light fixture unless you have a decent amount of sun shining on the fuge.

if the back of the tank is left uncovered would enough light filter through from the main tank? also from the the light that is slightly above the water?

It depends on what you want to use the 'fuge for. If you want to export massive amounts of algae, then you will need a light. If you just want to raise copepods with some liverock you dont need a light. Also, if you want to have a deep sandbed in it and thats all, you wont need a light for that.
