Ocellaris Agression or Mating?

I have 2 Ocellaris clowns which I purchased the same time from the same tank from a large group. I have had them for 2 weeks now and they seem to have gotten along in the past. One is larger than the other (about 1/2") which I presume is the female. The other is smaller and is probably the male. The past 2 days I have noticed some agression from the female to the male. She will chase him across the tank, and try to nip his tail. They do this almost all day when they cross paths. Today I was watching the tank and she had grabed him by the gill, and they were thrashing in the tank for about 5 seconds. For 2 days about the same time I noticed the agression I noticed that each of them will sometimes vibrate their whole body parallel to the others. I this most likely a territorial sign to stay away, or a mating ritual along with the agression? Any input from people with or who have had clowns would be greatly appreciated. I also read in a clown book that Ocellaris will rarely breed in less than a 30 gallon tank, and I have a 10 Gallon. If they do produce eggs will any of their tank mates eat or damage them? FYI: 10 Gallon, 32 W PC, Prizm Skimmer, Power head, 15 LBS Fiji, 6 Astrea, 12 Blue leg hermets, Fire shrimp, Algae Blenny, Fungia, Xenia, Shrooms, Weekly 15% Changes, O Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, 5 Nitrate.

Thanks for you Help!

I went through the same story and had to take one out as they beat each other up too much. They were tank raised Ocellaris from the same group and put in at the same time. Once they started showing extensive battle damage I didn't want to continue the stress on them. Best decision I ever made with my tank in my opinion. They were in my 10 gallon as well....

Yeah they are establishing they're picking order which is pretty obvious now. Mine are starting to get over it but she was never that hostile to grab his gill and thrash him! Maybe you should remove him if things dont get any better. They can breed in a 10 if they feel comfortable and once they mature. If you would like to learn more about them and how to breed them get this book

And no you cant leave the fry (baby fish) within the the same tank. Besides it will some time before they even do so. Some people wait 3 years before the clowns finally spawn.

Hey Cyber,

Hmmm IMO I wouldnt do it. 1 clown and another smaller fish but not 2 clowns. Besides if you do they WILL out grow the tank and I think they will beat each other up because they cant really stay away from each other in that small of a tank.

I like to have a mated pair of clowns but then when I saw the price, it knocked me off my shoes. Regular price is about ~$10 for 1 clown. When it comes to a mated pair, it's $40-50. Er, doesn't seem double in price for me. Hehe. I guess it takes lot of effort to find a mated pair. By the way, which clown is the smallest? I have a Claki that's about 2". I bought him when he was around 1". Dam, it grows fast. Probably the result from bitting my hands every time I clean the tank. "What can't kill you, makes you stronger" :D

From my source in front of me it says perculas are the smallest of all clown fish. Reaching only 2 1/2" as and adult and they grow slower.

I have ocellaris clowns so I cant say if they do infact grow slower.
