Tank Alteration

Hi there

firstly i just wanted to say what a wonderful site this is.

i did not know that "mini" reef tanks existied untill i discovered u fellows.

anyway i went today to my local marine/reef specialist and they told me it was imposible to do nano-reefs. well i want to prove them wrong!!!

this is going to be my first attempt at a reef tank, and would appreciate it if someone could help me a little.

this is what i intend to do:

i have a 10g glass tank that i would like to turn over on one of its sides so that the old length of the tank now becomes the height. then i will remove the top "lid" (which was previously a side) and cut a piece of glass to close the tank. so basically my 2 ft tank would measure in cm 60x30x30. 60 being the length.

so after my alteration the 60 sides would be the height.

My question therefore is would the new tank be ok to do a reef setup? using the same tank.

If you get this idea to hold water :P , you might find some trouble in getting enough light in there in such a small space (30x30). Your looking at short bulbs (unless you go metal halide) and a lot of diffusion before it gets to the bottom. you could probaly cram in a MH and 2 blue PC bulbs. You would need to build a pretty high hood for the MH though. But if you made the whole thing into a coloumn...

I dont' see ehy it wouldn't work. People do hex tanks.

why would you go through all that trouble to convert your 10 gal long into a 10 gal tall? Why not look around on the web and find some of the more usual shaped tanks offered nowadays? There are 10 gal cubes and all sorts of different shapes and sizes. It just sounds like to me your going to a lot of trouble to convert your 10 gal when you could just buy a tank with the shape you want? Look at the 11 gal via aqua tanks which are tall rather than wide. They come with a good overhead lighting sys and an undergravel filter and powerhead for around $110. Type in on search on nano-reef message boards and you'll find them. ;)
