People like metal halides because they are very bright, point-source light, that is heavy in the violet/blue end of the spectrum. And because they come in high wattages. Incandescents send current through a strip of tungsten (right?) and it heats up, and puts out a light that is heavier in the yellow/red end of the spectrum. An incandescent bulb operates very differently than a metal halide. You can't plug a metal halide into an incandescent socket or vice-versa. Link to comment
