I know this is an old link but, i really want to wire my own lighting, also is 250W+actinic vho enough for a 55gal.

im not sure i like it, I have 2 250w se iwaki bulbs, they are very yellow in color temp. On my 29 I couldnt get them to look any better with 2 vho actinics. I had them running on the aro electronic ballast. The deal here is to over drive the bulb to make the color more blue, which will shorten the life of the bulb possibly by 1/2. So the bulb might just be good for 6 months. Which will run the cost up more than a electronic setup. Also this is going to use more electric! I wouldn't paint the reflector either, just get something shinny. You could try it, but the biggest down fall is bulb life. And you will need 2 for a 55 gal. Mh covers about 24 to 30" max, and u have the divider in the middle.
