Turning Sump into refugium?

Hi I've got a 46 gallon bowfront reef tank with that has been set up for almost 2 years. My questions are....#1 Can I remove the bio balls from my trickle filter and should I?, (I've got a ton of liverock probably a lot more than I need. ) #2 Once I remove the bio balls what the heck should I place in the sump under the trickle filter? More mechanical filtration?, or is it possible to create some sort of refugium? Thanks to everyone who responds!

You could replace the bio balls with pieces of cured LR and they will do the same but can have added biota benefits. Also puting some LS and a light on the sump with a partitioned area will be helpfull if you put an algal bed in it.

If the tank is doing well, dont mess with it.

How are your nitrates doing?
