Question about unknown gill disease on Firefish Goby

Around my firefish's gills there is a curly wire growing out of his right gill. It's a white-ish color, and it's the shape of a spiral (actually, it's a multi-layer spiral thing, with curles) It's interesting because at first I thought he had a piece of food stuck in it.

 

I removed the curly junk from his gill a day ago with tweezers, but it's grown back since then. And when I removed it I could see a pinsize hole in his gill. He is breathing and swimming fine however.

 

Does anyone know what this may be?

That sounds interesting/ I've never seen that nor heard of it except for food sticking out of the gills. A pic would be cool if ya can get one.
