Ummm... I'm afraid to ask why you want to know... However, nitrates really aren't bad for anything, as far as we know. They will speed up the growth of algae and coral (in the instance that they speed up coral growth, there may be some problems with the formation of the calcium bi-carbonate skeleton - in EXTREAM cases). However, nitrates should not really affect the pep.... As a side note though, if your nitrates are THAT far off, you probably don't have everything else balanced out as well! Also algae will grow at a rapid rate, using up the nitrates... When these nitrates are used, the algae will begin to die, which will spike your ammonia!! This may have an effect on the pep, but the nitrates them selves would not. I have the same question as above: "why not preform a water change." and continue to preform small ones over a few weeks until this problem is solved!??
