ajroahkni
It's a place where things are protected/hidden from danger. In aquaria, a hang-on back or add'l tank where your little creatures and denitrifyers and macro algae can grow without predation from your fish/crabs, etc in the main tank. Look at the member's tanks section, you'll get to see quite a few neat ones - basically, it's having 2 tanks instead of one. Take a gander at the search button and type in "refugium" Link to comment

ross76053
ajroahkni nailed it right on. Example - I bought a 6-line wrasse a few weeks ago to control the flatworms in my tank. He's definitely got a handle on them. But the problem is, he eats amphipods & copepods too, and my main tank is depleted of them, so my refugium provides a safe haven for them to live.
