12G Nano cube hood mod

I recently purchased 12g nano cube and it looks awsome. But I really want to put bigger refugium and good skimmer on it. Problem is I have to drilled the back side on the tank but my tank is already established for couple of months, I can't take out anything right now. So this is what I was thinking.

 

Lift the hoot up like 3 inches using acrylic plexglass. I think I can put extension on the side but the front will be the problem because of the shape. Anyway, even if I put 3 inches plexglass on the side, I think I can safely lift my hood up. This will give me some good opening area on the back and I think i can put hang refugium with skimmer on it.

 

What do you guys think? Anyone else had this kind of mod? I saw Matt Gecko's custome hood and it has good opening in the back, that is my other option but it's quite expensive.
