Using a heater on a timer?

Is this a bad idea?

During the day, the lights keep the tank temp at around 80 degrees, but at night it starts to cool down. It usually gets to 74 degrees or so right before the lights come back on. It's a 2.5 MiniBow.

I have this heater: Mini Heater

Could I just set it up in the filter, and put it on a timer?

you could do that as long as your temps don't drop too low although with that mini heater I don't think you can control the temperature either, does it ever get too hot?

No, it's not adjustable. But it's only 7 watts, so I don't think it would get too hot, especially if only ran for about 12 hours a day.

I know some betta keepers that use them 24 hours a day and have no problems.

I guess I could always just try it with an empty tank and see how it goes.

Hey donna, maybe a good test would be to run the tank for a day without the lights. Run the heater instead and that way you can keep an eye on it and see if it would get too hot. Stability is the key here, so you're right to do something about it. IMO, a 6 degree swing everyday is unacceptable. hth

You could try it.

I'm pertty sure I've seen heater controllers though. You plug a non-thermostat heater into these and they turn it on and off instead. I don't have a direct link to any though, sorry.
