lighting kit for 7G

well, I THINK (and hope) my g-friend got me a AGA 7G bowfront for X-mas. What lighting should I get?

There's only about oh I dunno... a GAZILLION minibows to peruse.

Here a minibow, there a minibow, everywhere a minibow... old McNano had some minibows...ee iy ee iy MINIBOW ! Got 'em lit with everything from the cheesey light it came with to something short of nuclear fission.

 

Your lighting is gonna depend on what you want to keep in it...and if you're not sure what that might be.... sing the McNano song again.... ee iy ee iy MINIBOW! Go over there and look!

gilman (link #1) upgraded those standard lights you have to a 32w retrofit

 

stryfe (link#2) gutted a jbj hood and modified it to fit 2x32w retros

 

as for the jbj (http://jbjlighting.com/sys_formosa.html), the 17" model would fit perfectly over your minibow 7. This would require ditch the hood that came with your tank and make "open top." the jbj houses 2x24w

 

i really suggest you visit the two sites. both gil and stryfe have really nice tanks and it'll give you a good idea what each member keeps under their respective lighting choice.

I saw some pics on another site where someone had gutted a 24 inch canopy and cut it down and retro'd 3 x 32 watt CFs, and the tank looks awesome.

sounds easy enough.... if you've got a decent saw hehe all you'd need to do is pop off the plastic (most mgfs use plastic ends on their hoods), gut 'n strip the innards, cut down the body (by now it should just be an aluminum shell), fill back in the goodies, pop the ends back on.

I hate to be the party pooper, but maybe you should wait to see if you really get the tank. What if she just gets you a flannel shirt or something. You'd look pretty dumb walking around with 64 watts of PC strapped to your shirt.

go with a couple PCs in the 30 watt range n you'll be money! i'd recommend checking with bruce at PSL. i think he has a 20" hood that could maybe be cut down to fit a minibow. just got mine the other day-custom-love it. great price-fast service-looks good!
