this might sound stupid

i was wondering other then searching online for the info, by looking at a coral how do you know if its photosynthetic or needs to be feed phytoplanton or both? also, is it bad to keep actinic lights on 24/7 in the main tank?

There's a couple good sites with lots of info. Some of the larger online stores have stats and care on differant species(www.liveaquaria.com), for a quick referance. Got to your LFS or an online store and pick up a coral book.

 

Leaving the lights on 24/7 is very stressful on fish and will disturb there natural rest cycle. I notice corals behave differant at night also. It might not be a good idea.
