New tank that cracked when filled

Just received our 24 G tank in the mail. Went out and got sand, water and rock, filled the tank and was so excited to start the process. The next morning sitting at the table we heard the sound of glass cracking. Of course there was the mess to deal with and we will have to send back the tank. However, I can't help but ask myself what would have happened if the glass cracked and we were not at home. Does this happen often? Should we order another or look into something different?

It has happened to several people here as well, here are just some of the threads on cracked nanocubes for you to read while you decide weather or not you want to go with another one:

(this one was started by JBJ on the crack issue and is really pathetic)

I believe there are more but that should give you a good idea about the crack rate.

My sympathies! Mine cracked while I was out of the house. Dumped 12 gallons of stinky fish water on to my Office carpet, through the floor, and through the ceiling of my basement.

I currently have my replacement tank setup in my basement. I don't trust it, and can't afford anymore damage to my house. I'm waiting for Chris at nanocustoms.com to come out with his Acrylic version of the Nano Cube, then I'm going to transfer out of my glass Nano Cube into that tank, and put the Aquarium back where it belongs in my house - in my Office.

As far as steps you need to take to replace your tank, in the pathetic Official JBJ thread that shao-lin referenced above, there are instructions for what you need to do to contact JBJ for your replacement. You need to e-mail them, include a scanned copy of your receipt and photos of the crack. They will replace the tank, but will not compensate you for any damage to your house, or loss of livestock. I filed an Insurance claim to have my damage repaired, and was informed last week by my Insurance Company that they are going to pursue JBJ to recover the money for the repairs.

Honestly though - if you can get your money back and get into a different system - do that instead! You're not saving any money with the Nano Cube. By the time you do even minor modification, you'll be right in the ballpark of a "piece it together" system anyways. Acrylic is more expensive, but peace of mind and a good nights sleep are worth the extra $$$.

Good luck! If there's anything I can do to help you out, please let me know.

Cheers -

Ugg, I hate hearing these stories. I was a week away from buying a 12g NC, but I've made the desicion to wait. This will be my first tank in 10 years and first SW ever. I have a two story house (the second of which the tank will reside). I don't want to make my first a bad experience. Hurry Nanocustoms!
