I form my opinions and observations from what I have read not only from the polls. We all remember the Salt polls... we know two things... IO is probably NOT the best salt, it is however the most used but many people did not take that survey alot of people post here on the odd occasion rather than daily and they either didn't see the post or they didn't reply. Anyway I guess this confusion is over. BTW for what it is worth I think everyone here has something to offer from the newbie to the most experienced reef keeper, I respect your opinions, Dave's, Tiny's, and everyone elses for that matter. This may or may not have anything to do with what is best to use. But if you were to say something like most people here DON'T use IO, then the poll would show that not to be true. Within reason that is factual. What is best or not is not revealed with the poll, and there is lost of reason for different opinions about what is best or not. The skimmer thing was the exact same issue. The only thing that I had any dispute about what the number of people who used a skimmer. I never did comment on if skimming was good, bad, or ugly. But just to stay on topic, these are the main reasons I use a skimmer: 1) I believe that it is a little insurance just in case something goes wrong and I am not around. 2) I think that it increases gas exchange. And, I still do weekly water changes... Link to comment

BCOrchidGuy Posted December 4, 2002 Share Posted December 4, 2002 I never thought about the gas exchange but sure that makes good sense all that air being forced into the water column would out gas any CO2. Skimmers are extra insurance and like you say things do happen when you aren't around and they seem to happen fast. I never realized it but my hermit crabs kill each other, Im always finding them trying to pull each other out of their shells and then I find the remains of one or two. In my 72 that wouldn't be an issue but I wonder what kind of bio load that puts on my filtration in my 20, or the 7 I am considering. Link to comment

"egomaniacs"? ??? hey now, play time is over! i don't think anyone was trying to 'bully' anyone. oscar was just trying to correct a generalization by bcguy he didn't agree with (albeit w/a sledge hammer X) ). the other posters aren't trying to cajole anyone one way or the other imo. we're just stating our opinions and pers experiences. you want to w/c without skimmers, w/c with skimming, or use skimmers only and no w/c's go ahead, it's your head and $$$ (my head in the last case). i don't like saying "this can't work or that will work" because someone ends up proving me wrong, which is actually good for the hobby imo. nanos were taboo in general only a couple of years ago until reefers started to prove the majority wrong. deficiencies? everyone has them. i'm not shy to say i avoid sps or even most lps due to their 'difficulties' and the fact i'm a lazy bastage. this isn't a beauty or skills contest (whew!) but i'd like to think i ain't a blind fool either. I buy a $5 ticket and out of 20 times I've won $10 all but one time. Im not sure if I should keep buying my tickets there and make my Millions slowly or find somewhere that will sell me the winning ticket. Link to comment
