I broke my slug!

Just got in my order from etropicals this morning. FedEx was late and I had to get to class, but I went through the acclimation process step by step just to be safe. One of my new critters, a lettuce nudibranch, wasn't looking too good--not moving, a little x over each eye, "RIP" floating overhead, etc., but I thought maybe it was in some kind of shock and so I left for class.

I rushed back and it still wasn't moving. Remembering that they're partly photosynthetic, I flipped on the light and got a little bit of a response. However, it was in a darker part of the tank so I decided to move it into the light a bit more. When I picked it up, I noticed a nassarius snail chewing on a big gash in the nudi's side. I suspect the gash was already there and the nassarius was just being a nassarius. Pulling the snail away caused the gash to open up even further, to the point where it looked like the slug was going to pull apart. :o

I put it down in a spot with lots of light and algae, and after a few minutes it started moving and eating algae. I thought, YAY! But just a few minutes ago I checked on it and the back half of the animal had fallen off completely! The front was still moving a bit. So, can these animals lose a substantial portion of their bodies and regrow them, or am I just seeing some kind of death fidget reflex thingy?

I took the back part out of the tank, but I really like this animal and I want to try to save it if I can. Also, I seem to recall that the lettuce nudibranch doesn't secrete poison under stress... is this true or some kind of wishful false memory on my part? I'm putting carbon pads on the powerheads just in case. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well, the slug yet lives, even after another Nassarius or Nassarius-imposter attack (I've since removed all of those nasty little snails). I'm still hoping he'll pull through. He seems to be healing, or at least he's not spewing green stuff all over the place anymore.

Glad you liked the message title, Lt. Kerrigan. Even when tragedy strikes I can't help but pay homage to the Simpsons. :)

As long as it is moving, and is able to resperate, it has a 50/50 chance. keep an eye on it. Perhaps it was taking a liking to the algae as its "last meal" :D

It's dead. So, we have learned that lettuce slugs will not survive being eaten in two by nassarius snails.

eTropicals seems to be willing to honor their 7-day guarantee, the idea being that if the slug hadn't been sick or damaged in the first place, the snails wouldn't have gone after it. I'm glad, but I'd rather have the slug.

The snails are still in the cornfield until I'm sure they're not evil.

This is bogus man. That nudi was an @$$. He brojke up with his girlfriend and needed a place to stay so the snails were cool and said he could stay at their place untill he found one of his own. Only problem is he didn't even try to look for one. He was always "working on it." he constantly left the seat up even after 12 signs were posted to remind him. seriously this nubi was a complete douche bag. he would always pick some random sea slug off the street and give them drugs for sex. He would even do them on the snails bed. and not clean up after himself. he claimed to have done so, but what he really did was withhold the sea slugs crack until she licked the sheets clean. He didn't do it because he wanted it clean, he did it because he is a sick sadistic jerk. He had alsorts of wierd invert supremacy books and pamphlets. Bottom-line he had it comming just for all the under-aged slug-whores that he infected. Plus who can turn down a free meal?B)

my lettuce nudi scares tha crap out of me every other day. I will wakr up to check the tank and find it floating. I gently take it out and it starts moving so I place it on a nice hairy patch of algae and away it goes. My wife things it is the coolest and ugliest thing she has ever seen. Can't wait until she sees the sea hares doing the nasty, as I have now seen three times. Put on some cheesy 70's disco and the sea hares would make a good porno.
