Need Help

Alright, this is why I joined this board....My friend has a 90g reef, everything has been running smoothly over the last few months. Now, it is freaking out. The water has become very cloudy and some of the corals are putting this stringie spit looking stuff everywhere in the tank. He said that the other day he found two huge crabs in his tank that were knocking over the corals, so he shut down the filter and move the rock until he got them. The other thing he changed was that he did not use a calcium supplement and now he has started using Seachem calcium. On the side of the seachem bottle, it reads, Color and Clarity may varify between lots.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Well, with the info you’ve given, all I can say is "his water’s screwed up."

He needs to test everything:

Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, alk, CA, phosphates, SG, temp…

If those all checked out I’d then look at strontium, iodine and mag to make sure he didn’t accidentally OD something.

For now, big time water changes and tossing lots of activated carbon in there are the best course of action.

how long did he shut down his filtration system? if it was significant (>2 hours) the bene bacteria may have died off (mulm), especially if he's using a wet/dry filter (even less time).

moving the rocks could've upset the balance too. something that was rotten and sealed up may now be exposed. something that was living (i.e. peanut worm) may now be gooshed and dead.

maybe he didn't wash his hands and arms enough when he went after the crab. i.e. cologne, oil, grease, nail polish (hey, to each their own).

did he od on seachem? what's his tank readings? (specifically ammonia, nitrites, and pH)

I will take care of those test tonight. The only thing I can think of is that he OD the calcium.....but I am not sure if that made it become cloudy.

Thanx

I had him run a calcium test and the test shows that his calcium level is well over 500. The titration changes to a light orange and when he ran out of "C" with is 500, it was just turning orange and had not reached the light orange color. Any suggestions???

I had him run a 5 gal water change. Only 5g because I am not a big fan of large water changes. We will do another tonight when I get to his house, Turkey day or Friday. I will let you guys know how it took on Monday. Feel free to keep the info coming....I am up for any info you may have.

Thanx again

water change..... lower that calcium to 400 to 450, do it over a couple of days. Test everything though, Iodide etc everything may be out of whack.... seriously what I would do is a 20%wc daily for a week. DO NOT use additives, unless your salt is really lacking in calcium. After that week, do a 10% every 3rd day for another two to three weeks and then do a 10% water change every week.

BCOrchidguy has given you great advice. You may not be a big fan of large water changes, but unless you're a fan of dying corals, you (ie your friend) need to get things back into balance ASAP.

The CA addition probably caused a precipitative event that could have drastic effects on Alk, PH, mag and other things.

Doing several healthy water changes is the best way to fix it.
