until it turns a yucky color. :x about a week or two, tops ime. (depends upon the bioload and chemical you're seeking to extract)

 

i'll assume you have it in a power filter of some kind.

I'd remove it as soon as it looks icky. I know that is a horrible way to describe it but they usually turn a funky brown/gold color and you want to remove it then.

 

If it never turns "icky" a week is as much as needed under normal conditions.
