carbon and sand

The other night I discovered that my filter bag with the carbon media in it had a hole in it and spilled into my tank. I was wondering if this was okay to just leave it in there or take it out. Some of it are in hard to reach spots and I don't want to bother if I don't really need too. I also had some live sand in a bucket for a few days and without realizing it, I added ordinary tap water to it. I didn't realize this until a few days later after an awful smell came from the bucket. :x I realize everything has died in the sand now but is there anyway to salvage the sand and clean or sterilze it before adding it in to my tank.

Some carbon in the tank will be ok....there are no problems with it.

With the dead "live" sand you'd really just want to rinse it out with freshwater multiple times to clean it well. It can be reused after that.
