Question for those with aquaclear fuges

I'm planning on adding an aquaclear onto my tank for a refugium. I currently habe one on for water movement and adding occasional media. Every month it needs to be cleaned from slimy gunk - hair algae etc ... - so it's basically working as a refugium, lit by the light escaping to the back of the tank.

 

If I were to set it up with some sand, rubble and chaeto, will I still get this gunk - or will it be basically clean with the chaeto absorbing the excess nutrients?

You will still get it. I run LS,LR, Chaeto, Chemi-Pure AND Phosban in my AC500 and I STILL get all that crap.
