My top 3:

1. Yasha haze goby: rare, vibrant, symbiotic with pistol shrimp, actually has a personality

2. Onyx Perc: rare and un-cliche, "cute", symbiotic with anemones

3. Pygmy Cherub Angel: Small dwarf angel for nanos, always swimming in search of food, safe with corals and inverts.

ok- nobody said "top 3 for nano's"

since I have 11 gal, 600 gal and 20,000 gal reefs to play with, here goes...

1- Achilles tang. beautiful colors, active, and has the hard-to-keep factor

2- Pholidichthys leucotaenia (engineerfish aka convict blenny). looks like a moray eel, but stays small and not aggressive towards other fish. Super-cool undulatory swimmer adept at both forward and backward swimming. Plus, it was the subject of my M.S., so how could it not be a fav!

3-Bartlett's anthias. Bubble gum colors, great social behavior when kept in large groups, and they can change sex from females to males, so how can you go wrong? Much cooler than a clownfish that will bite your hand when you try to feed their anemone ;-)

of course, I wouldn't put any of these in a nano- I personally have a mantis shrimp in my 11 gal so fish are out of the question.....

1) Ocellaris clowns.... hands down you just cannot beat a clown.

2) Moorish Idol- once they are established that are most beautiful.

3) Pink Lyretail Anthias "Supermale"... see one and you'll know what I mean.

Man, a 20,000 gallon reef? This is off topic, but I'd LOVE to see pictures :)

more like an elevator shaft- it's an 18 ft cube!

and yes, I scuba in it every week. Honestly, the previous tank (7k gallons) was much more fun because I could snorkel and it looked more like a reef. The 20k gal tank is an experimental prototype for a much larger one to be built in the near future. See www.calacademy.org for more info

but, this is a site about nano reefs......

Hmmm..."dream fish"..

1. Achilles Tang--hard to keep factor (as previously stated)..and they're just gorgeous.

2. Titan Trigger--I love triggers..so why not go with one of the biggest?

3. Leopard Wrasses--Gorgeous, expensive....but mostly just gorgeous.

Cheers,

Fred

Choerodon fasciata = harlequin tusk fish

beautiful fish that can be kept in an aquarium (but best viewed on the reef IMO)

this is a pic i snapped of an unfortunate individual in a holding pond at a research station. unfortunate because it was awaiting disection (by me :*( ) during a parasitology course a few weeks ago..
