PC lighting for a 5.5

Hello all,

I'm setting up a new 5.5 gallon nano for my wife in our bedroom and I need to find lighting for it. I would like to use PC and have some decent wattage. The tank is 16"x8" but I have only about 15" in the hood to mount lights. I had this set up befor and use two 13w shop lights and was not too happy, so I would appreciate so input. Links to online complete retro kits would be great.

DO you know if that is 15" total or just the bulb? Also anything out there with a little higher wattage?

Hey Parasite1971, I have a hood for sale if your interested, I am not sure if it will fit on a MB5.5 or not unless the stock hood is the same as a MB7...

It fits. I gutted my 5.5 hood to put in a 32w retro. (Before I got my 7g minibow, I used it on a FW tank w/ a daylight bulb)

I have a 5.5 gallon and used the 2 x 36 watt bright kit from www.ahsupply.com, they also have plans they will include for a very easy hood/canopy you can build for less than $10

Well I have a custom hood that I made for it that I want to keep. I have 16" x 8" and about 2 1/2 " in heigth to fit in as much as I can without going over board on cost.

 

The two 36 watt kits look like what I would like to use but they are 17" long, I only have 16"x 8" like i stated above.

All you have to do is wire a light socket in your hood, and screw them in. I think this would be the best route for you

I was going to suggest the curley-q lights too. I have 3 over a 20G pod farm and they're actually pretty bright. And I have to 10W ones in there at 6500K.

I don't think that those would be good for corals, but for LR and Macro Algae, their awsome.

hey parasite, check out JMT mini bow set up. he took a current usa light and modded it to fit his mini bow. the light is pretty cheap too...i have a 5.5 too, but i bought a 28w retro. i wish i had seen his set up earlier.

Well I think I found what I'm going with. It is a CustomSeaLife 14" smart light retro fit. I can fit two of them in my hood for 64 watts. It is a 10000K and a Ultra Actinic. I will try to link it below.

Sunpaq has 6" 18w PC's you could buy, you could use an electronic ballast capable of 36w (or 18w duallies) and run two of those, drsfostersmith.com has them on sale for 10 bucks, http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod...2&N=2004+113346 I recommend the smartpaq. Or, just go with two 20w screw-ins.
