Ballast and power head

Can any one out there tell me what is Ballast when it comes to lightining. They sell these pc lights

with ballast (magnetic,electric) included, what this ballast really do?

 

Can I install my zoo med power head 212 whole unit inside the water like in the bottom, are these things water proof as far wiring goes?

the ballast is a transformer. it steps up the household 110v electricity to a required higher voltage to fire up the fluorescents or incandescents (i.e. PC's, VHO's, MH's) to light your tank or your room. ballasts and water, especially saltwater, do NOT mix!

 

make sure the powerhead's or pumps you get are submersible. some can be both, submersed and dry in-line. get to petsolutions.com or thatpetplace.com and request some catalogs for reading material.
