Rocket_155
hi a DSB is a deep sand bed. a deep sand bed is a thck layer or sand that is usually more than 3 inches deep (usually 4 inches). In a DSB you are providing enough depth that you produce or allow to exist an anoxic (partial or reduced oxygen) region. This region is where a type of bacteria that will metabolize nitrate lives. Metabolizing ammonium and nitrite is easiliy accomplished by aerobic (needs oxygen)bacteria. What the DSB do (simplified) is to allow a reduced oxygen layer to be establish where there is low water flow. In this region the anoxic bacteria can flourish, and consume nitrates -viola, no nitrate build up. A DSB can only form a thin layer, that is easily disrupted by burrowing critters. hope this helps rocket Link to comment
