Mud Filters fad or filter?

Would some one please help me?

I'm trying to figure out what mud filters are all about and if it would be a better type of filtration then Bio-wheels and Fluidized bed filters and plenums. I know I want to use caulerpa in my sump but don't know if I should use mud/ deep sand bed or some other alternative please help things are really murky for me when it comes to mud filters. ???

all a mud filter is is a type of refugium with super fine oolictic sand and elements mixed in. the macro's love to grow in this over say a corse substrate and the critters do very well in it also.

if you can find someone tearing down a system go and get some of the silty looking crap from the bottom of their sand bed throw it in a sump add a light and wham you have a mud filter!
